Photography and feminism - stories and images from the Donata Pizzi Collection
Danilo Montanari Editore 2024 ISBN 9791280750655 Acqn 36545
Pb 16x24cm 72pp col ills £28.25
Published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition, this catalogue reflects how it came to be
by creating an intergenerational dialogue between artists and photographers who used the
photographic medium to traverse four aspects: the family album and its relationship with memory;
the construction and renegotiation of gender identity; stereotypes and domestic spaces; and roles
and social censorship. It centres on the theme of feminist photography and a gender-based
approach, as the medium is well-suited to channelling the need for feminist representation and
forms of storytelling. Featuring work by Liliana Barchiesi, Lucia Marcucci, Lisetta Carmi, Paola
Mattioli, and others.

From the streets to the sites of industry, this publication shows an unaffected view of the climate
protests in Europe between 2018 and 2023. Photographs by Scott Wiese reveal aspects of what
demonstrators experience when called to action: joy and solidarity, violence and rejection,
borderline experiences of body and mind. Either ignored or defamed by the majority,
environmentalist groups are taking responsibility for a largely inert, clueless, or resigned society
that is well aware of the impending consequences of climate change but is doing nothing. Wiese's
images appear alongside text contributions outlining the hope and despair of all those advocating
for a sustainable future.

'There is a Big River, in which there is a Big Island, in which there is a Lake, in which there is an
Island, in which there is a Small House, where a Life is Growing in a Womb' is Andras Ladocsi's
first step towards articulating how he believes we are all connected as human beings. The series
of photographs celebrates the skin, the body, gender, friendship, trust, and life in general, with all
its ups and downs. Ladocsi is a Hungarian-born, Paris-based visual artist who works in
photography and film. His oeuvre explores the inner depths of people and the power of the
environment around us, seeking to uncover how we all exist in a place of connectedness.

'Murmurings of the Skin' is an exploration of the human connection to the body, the intersection of
bodies and technology and the human need for physical contact. Over nearly eight years, Olivia
Arthur has been making work that looks at people's relationship with their bodies, what it means
to feel comfortable in one's own skin, and the importance of touch and intimacy. This work has
included a series about young people, physicality and sexuality, stability and robotics, about
touch, gestures, and solitude in COVID times. The work was triggered by her own pregnancy and
the birth of her two children, images of whom appear throughout the series.

The highly symbolic photographic language of Federico Clavarino's 'Italia O Italia' weaves an
intriguing narrative. It is the story of a complex nation whose ancient ruins cast shadows on the
shards of a shattered present. The book's images were scanned from the original chromogenic
prints and then printed in the darkroom by the photographer himself. Born in Turin in 1984,
Clavarino studied narration techniques at Alessandro Baricco's Scuola Holden. In 2007 he moved
to Madrid, where he currently lives and works as a teacher of photography at BlankPaper
Escuela. This is his third photobook.

For twelve years, Sophia Kesting and Dana Lorenz have explored Leipzig's Peaceful Revolution
Square (Platz der friedlichen Revolution) and its transformation through photography. Wilhelm-
Leuschner-Platz reflects ongoing debates on preserving GDR architecture amid societal and
economic interests. Their project, Asphalt, Stones, Shards, features 1,500 medium-format black-
and-white photographs that document political and urban changes. Stark flash-lit night shots
contrast with fragmented daytime scenes, blending real events and staged reenactments.
Eschewing narrative, the images create a visual dialogue. Drawing on childhood memories of
1989/90's upheaval, the artists incorporate biographical text fragments. Their photo book
encapsulates the site's unfulfilled transformation, emphasizing stasis through repeated motifs as
a reflective documentary space.

'Five Leaves Left' is a photographic Project by Berlin based Creative Todd Schulz. All Images
from the Series "Five Leaves Left" were photographed on Location in the County of Brandenburg,
Germany on special Winter Conditions of heavy Snow and Fog. While walking his Dog, Todd
found a Situation that has always been on the back of his Mind. Capturing the Beauty and
minimal Structure of Trees as if they had been brought into a Photo Studio and presented against
a white Backdrop. Anything that would normally interfere with the basic and pure Shape of the
Trees had vanished for a few magic Hours and released a rare View of the minimal and fragile
Beauty of Trees. All Visuals capture the real Photographic Scenes and have only been retouched
slightly.

This book presents the artist's research process from early archival investigations to location
photography, from drawings and diagrams to collages, from archive films to archive boards,
shedding light on the early stages of the development of Cemetery. Inspired by and based on the
elephant graveyard myth, the film questions not only our idea of nature and the meaning of the
myth but also the ability of cinema to move us, to affect us and to shape us. "It combines images
with sound and vibrations to induce new corporeal modes of interspecies relationship." The film
"creates a complex sensorial experience that collapses the boundaries between art, nature
documentary and adventure film."

Ayumi Nabe's 'Hotel Mejiro Emperor' can be seen both as a classic photobook and a wacky
encyclopaedia of active and abandoned Japanese love hotels. The photographer's exploration of
these overtly extravagant and kitschy places opens the door to the weirdly fascinating and
secretive rooms that play a major part in Japanese culture and sexuality and are usually less
accessible to Westerners. From among the 350 love hotels the photographer has visited so far,
those that were designed during the Showa era, from the 1960s to the 1980s, were specifically
chosen for this anthology.

'Road to America' documents the Cools, a group of friends who share a love of motorcycles and
rock and roll. Through a selection of nearly 100 previously unreleased images, Kiichi Okubo
follows the group on their journey by Harley Davidson motorcycle to Los Angeles, Hollywood, and
the Mojave Desert, where they shoot a music video. In the photobook, the author, who is himself
fascinated by motorcycles and rock music, writes about his initial encounter and parting with the
Cools, his ten years of living in the United States, and his reactivation of the Original Cools '90:
Kazumi Murayama, Hidemitsu Sato, James Fujiki, Frank, and of course Kiichi Okubo himself.

Since childhood, Ibuki Kase spent a lot of time around foreign musicians in Japan. He was
especially close with Jamaican reggae artists, and believed he was Jamaican until he was ten
years old. Naturally, this had a great influence on his personality, his love for music, and his
sociability. At age seventeen, Kase went to Jamaica for the first time and took pictures. He visited
Jamaica again in 2018 to take even more photos, and held an exhibition upon returning to Japan
that generated positive media attention. 'Jamaican Vybz' is Kase's personal and loving tribute to
the people of the island, and includes images from another trip he made in 2023, when he met his
hero, Buju Banton.

In the summer of 2017, photographer Fazal Sheikh travelled with writer and conservationist Terry
Tempest Williams to the small town of Bluff, in southern Utah, to attend a gathering of the Utah
Dine Bikeyah intertribal coalition. The elders of the five regional tribes had worked together since
the organisation was founded in 2012, putting aside their historical differences in pursuit of a
common goal: to protect their ancestral lands in Utah. It marked the start of a five-year project by
Sheikh in which he worked with tribal communities and others, immersing himself in these desert
landscapes, walking, listening, and absorbing signs on the land's surface that offer clues to the
beauty beneath.

Among other topics, Vittorio Mortarotti's photobook 'Soil' hints at lives being lived at the margins
of political existence. Yet it does this without ever pushing an obvious agenda or confirming any
bias. At the centre of this new body of images is a reflection on identity transformations and
liminal conditions. With camera in hand, Mortarotti journeyed to the borders of Europe where
thousands of people seek the possibility of a new life. He even made portraits during therapeutic
hypnosis sessions. The images presented in this book thus alternate between a social approach
and an introspective one, interweaving to construct a timeless narrative.

preconceived notions about this vibrant country. Created by Zahir Elias-an eclectic fashion
designer, illustrator, drag queen, actor, poet, and stage performer-and Elena Petitti di Roreto, a
film director and photographer, the book captures their shared journey through Malawi. The
narrative unfolds from two perspectives: one side explores the traditional village life, celebrating
the customs and communal spirit that define Malawi's cultural roots, while the other side dives
into the contemporary youth culture and vibrant gay scene, revealing a bold and progressive side
of Malawian society. The book is co-published with Withstand Film.

images touch on deep-rooted cultural traditions, ancient streets and buildings, the devout
expressions and rituals of Catholicism, developed and wild landscapes, portrayals of local crafts

Since the 1990s, a group of residents and activists, known as No TAV, in the Susa Valley in Italy
have been resisting the Turin-Lyon high-speed railway project. No TAV generally questions the
worthiness, cost, and safety of the project, and deems the new line useless and too expensive. Its
realisation, they say, is driven by construction lobbies and corruption. Photograph Matteo
Trevisan travelled to the Susa Valley with the intention to narrate the No TAV movement from a
different point of view, trying to put people - specifically, the young men and women who are part
of this activism - at the centre of his story, illuminating the ties that bind a community caught up in
this struggle.

Inside this book is a chorus of voices on notions of Black social life, public communion, and
humanities of the Indian Ocean. Many South African families have pictures of the children at the
beach, relishing in the flow of water, being alive through each other. These images portray the
enjoyment of being in the world that Black families affirmed in each other. Tracing the humanity
found in personal photographs such as these enables a negation of the tide of images that mock
and belittle Black people. While some of the book's contributors respond to the series of images,
others share their critical perspectives and reflect on the intimacy and vastness of being Black at
the beach.

The fifth Street Report observes the klofer stange (carpet hangers) in the neighbourhoods of
Zagreb, Croatia. These utilitarian furniture, commonly built in post-war socialist housing estates,
function as a public hanging amenity to dust privately-owned carpets. Even though its relevance
in public life may have waned with modern vacuum cleaners and other cleaning products, it still
stands in between the housing blocks. Some have found new public functions, some find
themselves in awkward situations as life rearranges itself, and some look almost as if they are
minimalist sculptures. Why has it not been removed?

swirling dust of the Black Rock Desert and the vogue ballrooms of Paris to comic cons, fetish and
queer events, and more, the images show real people as they appear in spaces where creativity
and passion are celebrated. It is a powerful tribute to community, individuality, and the artistry of

In Burkina Faso, tragic events such as sudden death, illness, or accident, or those that deviate
from the norm, are invariably interpreted as the result of malevolent intervention. A culprit must
therefore be identified. Raised in this culture, Adrien Bitibaly observed from a young age the
significance of traditional beliefs in Burkinabe society. As an adult, Bitibaly traversed the country
to meet traditional priests, individuals endowed with the "ability" to determine whether a person
possesses malevolent powers. His photographic work aims to reveal what can trigger
accusations of witchcraft, yet his intent is to explore the genesis of a popular belief, rather than to
prove a truth.

Michel Medinger is a self-taught artist whose references range from Dadaism and the surrealist
legacy to classical Dutch painting. He initially had a passion for painting, before devoting himself
to photography from the 1960s onward. Each of his photographs is the result of a carefully
developed staging. Each is composed from his fabulous and fanciful collection of objects
accumulated over the years. The strange and incongruous associations he imagines create
surprising, sometimes disturbing images, where fantasy, eroticism, and death coexist. 'Lord of
Things' presents Medinger's little-known works, accompanied by texts from Cyrille Putman,
Florence Reckinger-Taddei, and Paul di Felice.

Chiara Indelicato, photographer and resident of Stromboli, explores life on a volcanic island,
where the inhabitants live with the acute awareness of a finite world, at the mercy of the
elements. Beneath the ashes, between sea and fire, her work questions how to subsist in an
environment with limited resources. Indelicato's project proposes a reflection on the climate
emergency, claiming an animist relationship with nature and the right to defend this living, fragile
land, for which the volcano itself becomes the spokesperson. Developing her images with coffee,
vitamin C, and seawater, she weaves an organic link between her process and the island, which
remains rough and indomitable.

Since the start of his career, Yurie Nagashima has taken photographs that address the theme of
"family". This book is composed of photographs and diary entries from Nagashima's participation
in the Village Nomade residency programme in Estavayer-le-Lac, Switzerland, in 2007. The
photographs were inspired by images of flowers taken by Nagashima's grandmother about 25
years ago and carefully stored in a box that was found in his late grandfather's house. They
portray the flowers he encountered on the grounds of Village Nomade, interior views of his
quarters, and his young son who accompanied him. It is a condensed version of his time there,
