Solution

(a) (i) (f g)(x) = 3x 2 + 2x + 5 ,

(ii) (g f)(x) = 3(x + 5) 2 + 2(x + 5) = 3(x 2 + 10x + 25) + 2x + 10

= 3x 2 + 32x + 85
(b) (i) g -1 (x) = 5x ,

Solution

(a) (i) (g f)(2) = g(3) = 5 ,

(ii) (f f)(3) = f(4) = 5

(iii) (g f -1 )(4) = g(3) = 5

(b) It is not 1-1 [g(3)= 5 and g(4)=5]

(c) g(f(x)) = 5 , so f(x) = 3 or f(x) = 4

Hence, x = 2 or x = 3
