CODOMINANCE
Codominance is when both alleles in heterozygous organisms
contribute to the phenotype.

Instead of one allele completely hiding the effect of the other in a

heterozygote, they both have an effect on the phenotype. This is
codominance.

Recall that phenotype refers to the physical characteristic of an organism

as influenced by the genome and environmental factors.
EXPECTED OFFSPRING
When a parent with genotypes RR and
rr cross, all offspring will be
heterozygous Rr and since the color

SYMBOLS FOR
CODOMINANCE
We cannot represent codominance with a capital and small letter (Rr) because this
suggests that one allele is dominant and the other is recessive. Which is not true in
the case of codominance because both alleles contribute to the phenotype. So
instead, we use a superscript.

Example:
w w
C C White flowers
R
C C R Red flowers
w R
C C Pink flowers
CODOMINANCE-INHERITANCE OF ABO BLOOD GROUPS
The gene that determines your blood group is represented with the capital letter I. It
has 3 alleles.

CHARACTERISTICS
When alleles that control a particular characteristic are found on the sex
chromosome, this inheritance is called as sex linked.

Most of these alleles that control a particular characteristic are mainly

found in the X chromosome since it’s much larger than the Y
chromosome.

Thus, sex linked recessive conditions are more common in males since
they only have one X chromosome.

Though females have 2 copies of X chromosomes, it is likely to inherit

one dominant allele that masks the effect of the recessive allele.
