Letter from the Program Chair

You are warmly invited to the 76th annual meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society, Wednesday
through Friday, November 20-22, 2024 at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, 333 West Harbor Drive,
San Diego, CA, 92101. A full draft of our program is available on the ETS website at www.etsjets.org.

In December 1949 since 60 scholars gathered at the YMCA in Cincinnati, OH, at the first meeting of the
ETS “to foster conservative biblical scholarship by providing a medium for the oral exchange and written
expression of thought and research in the general field of the theological disciplines as centered in the
Scripture.” Much has changed over the past 76 years, but God has been consistently faithful in blessing the
work of the ETS, with a current membership of over 4200 and roughly half of the membership attending
the annual meetings in a given year.

The themes of the annual meetings are chosen several years in advance by the Board of Directors. The
theme for this year is Global Evangelicalism. What are some of the trends of the evangelical movement
around the world, what issues do we face and how do we respond? These are just some of the questions
that our plenary speakers and a good cross section of our presenters at parallel sessions will address. As
always, of course, there will be a wide variety of other topics under our various theological disciplines.

We are privileged to have for our three plenary speakers, Dr. M. Daniel Carroll R., Dr. Elizabeth Mburu
and Dr. Walter Kim. Dr. Carroll, the Scripture Press Ministries Professor of Biblical Studies and Pedagogy
at Wheaton College will address “Voices from Latin America: Pioneering Pathways, Lasting Legacies.”
Dr. Mburu, a professor of New Testament and Greek at the International Leadership University, African
International University and Pan-Africa Christian University in Nairobi, Kenya, will feature “The Church
in Africa and the Future of Global Evangelicalism. Dr. Kim, President of the National Association of
Evangelicals will speak on “The Reviving Impact of Glocal Evangelicalism,” and, no, “Glocal” is not a
typographical mistake!

Our President this year, Dr. Karen H. Jobes, the Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor Emerita of New Testament
Greek and Exegesis at Wheaton College, will give her presidential address at our banquet on “Jesus’
Succession Plan”. We have a rich feast of presentations to which to look forward.

One indicator of the growth of the ETS is that we receive many more proposals for papers than there is
time for presentations. Because of some unique challenges this year due to hotel scheduling and facilities
and the number of papers we have accepted, you will see that not everything is happening at the times
you may have grown accustomed to expecting, including the plenary presentations and the business
meeting. So please check the schedule carefully for times and locations. But we hope you will make it a
priority to attend the plenary sessions and the presidential address because of the excellent quality that
we expect from them.

We all owe an extraordinary debt of gratitude to our Executive Director, Dr. Ken Magnuson, and to our
Meeting Planner, Bonnie Thigpen, and their hundreds of hours of work in preparation for these meetings.
We also deeply appreciate the program committees, the executive committees and our volunteers, without
whom these meetings could similarly not occur.

Lord willing, we will see you in San Diego.

Parallel sessions
The parallel sessions are composed of five different session types.

Program Unit Sessions

are a combination of invited papers and proposed presentations which were selected by the
program unit steering committees. ETS has three types of program units: Consultations, Study
Groups, and Sections. Consultations are new program units which are responsible for one session
of invited papers at the annual meeting. Study Groups are narrowly focused groups which require
active, collaborative participation by the group members. ETS encourages Study Groups to publish
the results of their work. Study groups are responsible for one session of invited papers at the
annual meeting. Sections are broadly defined groups that represent general areas of interest.
Responsible for one session of invited papers and one session of papers drawn from member
submissions, the Sections offer the most access for unsolicited papers.

Affiliated Society Sessions

feature presentations that were selected and arranged by one of the three societies which join ETS
each year: the Evangelical Philosophical Society, the Near East Archaeological Society, and the
Adventist Theological Society.

Theme Sessions
are composed of presentations submitted by members, which address the conference theme.
These presentations were evaluated by a panel of scholars under the direction of the program
chair. The theme presentations have been arranged into cohesive sessions based on texts, topics,
and methods.

General Discipline Sessions

are composed of presentations that were submitted by ETS members and rated by a panel of
scholars who served under the direction of the program chair. These presentations have been
grouped into basic disciplines: Old Testament, New Testament, Systematic Theology, Church
History/Historical Theology, and Practical Theology.

Volume 1 Volume 2

In this magisterial two-volume study, Frances M. Young explores crucial questions about the
emergence of doctrine in the early church. Volume 1 makes a persuasive case that the scriptural
canon and church creeds developed concurrently. Volume 2 examines the role of scripture in the
debates that forged Christian dogma on the nature of God. Throughout both books, Young skillfully
illuminates the cultural and historical context surrounding her subject matter. This magnum opus is
an invaluable resource for scholars of patristics, exegesis, and systematic theology.

The Scope of Salvation in Reformed Theology
Richard J. Mouw
How broad is the scope of salvation? Exploring this longstanding
question, Richard J. Mouw draws on Scripture and a rich heritage
of Calvinist theology. Mouw explains how Christians can affirm God’s
justice while holding hope for the wideness of his saving mercy.
Divine Generosity serves as a biblically based, doctrinally sound
guide to pressing questions about salvation.

A HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY:
A TRINITARIAN APPROACH
Gerald Bray
Theology is important. But so is the story behind the
specific doctrines that have been debated, defined, and
refined throughout church history. In this book, professor
Gerald Bray introduces readers to the history of Christian
theology, the Trinity (our doctrine of God), and the Bible
(our knowledge of God).

RUINED SINNERS TO RECLAIM:

SIN AND DEPRAVITY IN HISTORICAL,
BIBLICAL, THEOLOGICAL, AND
PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE
David Gibson and Jonathan Gibson, Editors
Ruined Sinners to Reclaim persuasively reaffirms the doctrine
of total depravity from biblical, historical, theological, and
pastoral perspectives, drawing on the debates of theologians
throughout church history. This book features contributions
from respected theologians—including Michael A. G. Haykin,
Gray Sutanto, and R. Albert Mohler Jr.—to help readers
understand the reality of our sinful nature, its debilitating
effects, and the Holy Spirit’s role in salvation. This is the
second book in the Doctrines of Grace series, which explores
the central points of the Canons of Dort.
