malfunctions, I/O device issues, and program errors like arithmetic overflows or illegal
memory access. Depending on the severity, the OS may halt the system, terminate the
problematic process, or return an error code to the process for correction. The goal is
to ensure consistent and correct computing. Debugging involves finding and fixing
errors in both hardware and software, including performance issues considered as
bugs. Operating systems log error information to alert system operators when a
process fails and can store a core dump of the process's memory for analysis.
Debuggers can then probe running programs and core dumps to explore code and
memory. Kernel debugging is more complex due to the kernel's size, control of
hardware, and lack of user-level tools. When a kernel crash occurs, error details and
memory state are saved for analysis. Different tools and techniques are used for
operating-system and process debugging due to their distinct nature. Performance
tuning aims to enhance system performance by identifying and eliminating
bottlenecks. Operating systems monitor and log system behavior to identify
inefficiencies and bottlenecks, which can be analyzed later for performance
improvement. Tools like DTrace dynamically add probes to running systems, providing
extensive insights into kernel, system state, and process activities without affecting

program.
The process state refers to the current condition or phase of a process during its
execution. A process can be in one of several states, which include:

3. Waiting: The process is temporarily halted, waiting for an event like I/O
completion or a signal.

These states can vary in naming across different operating systems, but the
underlying concepts remain consistent. Additionally, some operating systems may

execution.

new, ready, running), program counter indicating the next instruction to execute,
and CPU registers including accumulators, index registers, and stack pointers.
Additionally, the PCB holds CPU-scheduling details like process priority and
scheduling queue pointers, memory-management information like base and limit
registers or page tables, accounting information such as CPU and real-time usage,
and I/O status like allocated devices and open files. Essentially, the PCB acts as a
comprehensive repository storing dynamic information that varies from one
process to another, facilitating the proper execution and management of processes
within the operating system.
Process scheduling is a crucial aspect of operating systems that aims to maximize CPU
utilization and ensure efficient task execution. The primary objectives of
multiprogramming and time-sharing are to keep a process running continuously and
allow user interaction with multiple programs concurrently.
To achieve this, the operating system employs a process scheduler that selects
available processes for CPU execution. Processes enter a system through a job queue
and move to a ready queue when they are ready to execute. When a process is
allocated CPU time, it may issue I/O requests, create child processes, or be
interrupted, causing it to switch between different queues like I/O queues or back to
the ready queue.
Operating systems use different types of schedulers, including the long-term scheduler
(job scheduler) and short-term scheduler (CPU scheduler). The long-term scheduler
controls the degree of multiprogramming and selects processes from a pool for
memory allocation, whereas the short-term scheduler selects processes from the
ready queue for CPU execution frequently, often every 100 milliseconds.
In UNIX, process creation involves the `fork()` system call, where the child process
inherits the address space of the parent. The child can then use the `exec()` system
call to load a new program into its memory space. In contrast, Windows uses the
`CreateProcess()` function to create a child process, loading a specified program into
its address space during creation.
11. What is inter-process communication and what models exist for it?
In the shared-memory model, processes share a memory region to exchange data. This
model requires explicit synchronization and is typically faster but can face cache
coherency issues, especially in multi-core systems. The message-passing model
involves processes communicating via message exchange without sharing memory.
This model is useful in distributed systems and offers simplicity in programming.
Shared memory requires establishing a memory region that multiple processes can
access. An example scenario is the producer-consumer problem, where a producer
generates data consumed by a consumer. Shared buffers are employed for this, either
bounded or unbounded, to manage data exchange between processes.
