cleanliness (10%).
PERFORMANCE TASK IN STATISTICS & PROBABILITY
PROBLEM SET 1

1. A market research company informs a prospective 24 hours convenience store that the
average income per family in the region is ₱650,000 per annual. The family income is
assumed to be normally distributed with standard deviation of ₱95,000, based on an early
study. For a random sample of 125 family, the mean income of family is found to be
₱620,000. Test the null hypothesis that the population mean income of family is ₱650,000
at 5% significance level.
2. The supervisor of a certain company claims that the mean workday of his workers is 8.5
hours per day. A sample mean of 40 workers was taken and it was found out that the mean
workday is 8.3 hours with a standard deviation of 1 hour. At the 0.01 significance level, is
the mean workday less than 8.5 hours?
3. According to TPNHS Power and Associates, the mean purchase price of a cellphone device
in 2008 was ₱9580. In 2023, a random sample of 25 business managers who owned a cell
phone device showed a mean purchase price of 10,500 with a sample standard deviation of
1350. At 0.05, has the mean purchase price increased?
4. It is claimed that the average number of motorcycles using the FPL’s parking lot each day is
103 vehicles. A student taking up Statistics recorded the number of vehicles using the
parking lot over a four-week period. A table of the number of vehicles are shown below.

100 95 105 98 95 91 110 95 105 91 111 96 96 108

110 88 100 91 98 95 105 88 100 95 85 120 105 111

Do the collected data present sufficient evidence to indicate that the average number of
vehicles using FPL’s parking lot is different from 115 vehicles? Use 0.10 level of
significance and assume that the population is normal.

5. An electric utility survey indicates that 18% of all families in a community own laptop. A
separate study of 80 families with school-age children in this community finds that 22 of them
owns laptop. Test whether the proportion of families with school-age children owning laptops is
higher than that of general population in the area. Use 0.01 level of significance.
6. An auditor claims that 68% of a company’s invoices are incorrect. To test this claim, a
random sample of 58 out of 90 invoices is checked and found to be incorrect. Test at the 0.05
significance level if the auditor’s claim is supported by the sample evidence.

less than 2.8 kg? Assume that the population standard deviation is 0.90 kg. Use 0.01 level
of significance.
4. The researchers indicate that the time required for a senior high school student to complete
a 60-item Mathematics test is 110 minutes. If a random sample of 75 senior high schools
took an average of 105 minutes to finish the test and a standard deviation of 55 minutes.
Does this show that the mean time for a senior high school student to complete a 60-item
Mathematics test is less than 110 minutes? Test the hypothesis, at 0.01 level of
significance.
5. Researchers studying the effects of diet on growth would like to know if a keto diet affects
the height of a child. The researchers randomly selected 20 children that are 10 years old.
The average height of the children is 97 centimeters with a standard deviation of 15
centimeters. The average height for all ten-year-old children is 95 centimeters. Conduct a
hypothesis test to determine whether there is overwhelming evidence at α=0.05 that ten-
year-old children are less the height as other ten-year-old children. Assume that the heights
of ten-year-old children on keto diet are approximately normally distributed.
6. It is claimed that the average number of Apo Wang-od inks a person each day is 8 persons.
A student from Mathenech School taking up Statistics recorded the number of Apo Wang-
od’s inks a person over 14 days. A table are shown below.
7 9 10 11 9 8 12
9 10 5 9 12 5 13
Do the collected data present sufficient evidence to indicate that the average number of
Apo Wang-od inks a person each day is 8 persons? Use 0.05 level of significance and
assume that the population is normal.
