Class 10 - Mathematics
Polynomials Test 01

Solution

1. (b) x2 - 3x -10
Explanation: Given, sum and the product of the zeros of a quadratic polynomial are 3 and -10 respectively
i,e. (α + β) = 3 and αβ = −10
Therefore, required polynomial is
2 2
x − (α + β)x + αβ = x − 3x − 10

2. (d) 6 and 8
−b
Explanation: Sum of the zeroes of the polynomial = = =6
6

a 1

And Product of the zeroes of the polynomial = = =8

c 8

a 1

3. (a) both positive

Explanation: x2 - 7x + 12
= x2 - 4x - 3x + 12 = 0
= x(x - 4) -3(x - 4) = 0
= (x - 4)(x - 3) = 0
∴ x - 4 = 0 or x - 3 = 0

⇒ x = 4 or x = 3

4. (a) - (iii), (b) - (i), (c) - (iv), (d) - (ii)

5. we have function f(x)=x + 7x + 10 2

by comparing ax + bx + c we get
2

a = 1, b = 7 , c = 10
Sum of zeroes = − = -7 a
b

So the required answer is -7

6. Given; 4x2 - 4x - 3
= 4x2 - 6x + 2x - 3
= 2x(2x - 3) + 1(2x - 3)
= (2x - 3)(2x + 1)
So, 4x2 - 4x - 3 = 0
⇒ (2x - 3)(2x + 1) = 0

⇒ 2x - 3 = 0 or 2x + 1 = 0

⇒ x = or x = -

Zeroes of 4x2 - 4x - 3 are and −

7. Here the given polynomial is:
f(x)=x2 + 2x - 195
= x2 + 15x - 13x - 195
= x(x + 15) - 13(x + 15)
= (x + 15)(x - 13)
f(x) = 0 if x+15=0 or x-13=0
⇒ x = -15 or x = 13

So, the zeros of given polynomial are -15 and 13.

8. The given polynomial is
p(t) = 9t2 - 6t + 1
For zeroes of p(t)
9t2 - 6t + 1 = 0

⇒ 9t2 - 3t - 3t+ 1 = 0
⇒ 3t( 3t - 1) -1( 3t - 1)= 0

⇒ (3t - 1) (3t - 1)= 0

1 1
⇒ t = ,

∴ zeroes are 1

9. Sum of zeroes = <0 [as zeroes are negative means sum of zeroes is negative]
p
q
So that p
>0
⇒ q > 0, p > 0 or q < 0, …….. (i)
p < 0

Product of zeros = > 0 [as zeroes are negative means product of zeroes is positive]
r

⇒ r > 0, p > 0 or r < 0, p ………. (ii) < 0

∴ From (i) and (ii), p, q and r will have same signs i.e.
Either p > 0, q > 0, r > 0
Or p < 0, q < 0, r < 0.

11. i. (b) Since, the given graph is parabolic is shape, therefore it will represent a quadratic polynomial. [∵ Graph of
quadratic polynomial is parabolic in shape]
ii. (c) Since, the graph cuts the x-axis at -1, 5. So the polynomial has 2 zeroes i.e., -1 and 5.
iii. (a) Sum of zeroes = -1 + 5 = 4
iv. (c) Since α and β are zeroes of the given polynomial and β > α
∴ α = -1 and β = 5

∴ |8α + β| = |8(-1) + 5| = |-8 + 5| = |-3| = 3

v. (d) Since the zeroes of the given polynomial are -1 and 5.

∴ Required polynomial p(x)

= k{x2 - (-1 + 5)x + (-1)(5)} = k(x2 - 4x - 5)

For k = -1, we get
p(x) = -x2 + 4x + 5, which is the required polynomial.
