Directions: When you sit in a classroom observing an expert teacher delivering a lesson. You
may notice and interpret a lot of things about how the teacher design and implement the lesson.
This activity aims to provide you the opportunity to see the messy reality and reflect how you are
going to do when you stand in front of your students. Please choose at least 3 aspects from
the following list to write in-detail and in-depth about:
Meaningful instructional events that you notice in the class;
Reflections on what you could learn from the teacher or how you could improve the
lesson.
Please write at least 100-150 words for each aspect and please try to focus on various aspects
for the 10 lessons that you observe.
1. Learning Objectives: Were the learning objectives (what students were expected to
understand and do) clear to students? If so, how do you know? What did the teachers
write, do, and/or say to make it clear what they expected? If not, what could they have
done differently to make the learning objectives clear?
For the learning objective of the class in this lesson the teacher made it very clear that she
wanted to complete at least 2 chapters of the book they were reading. This was the learning
objective the teacher set out and the students understood. As part of making them read she
also asked for volunteers which helped her objective because it made the passionate
students stand out. Afterwards the class did “popcorn” reading which is when a student who
was picked gets to pick who reads next. At the end of the reading students were assigned in
groups because she wanted to hear the ideas and thoughts of all the students in a natural
manner.
2. Differentiation: Explore how the teacher tailors instruction to meet the diverse needs of
students. Observe any differentiation strategies employed, such as tiered assignments,
flexible grouping, or accommodations for students with special needs. Contemplate how
you can implement differentiation to address varying learning styles and abilities in your
classroom.

3. Lesson Structure: Analyze the overall structure of each lesson, including the
introduction, core content delivery, and conclusion. Reflect on the importance of clear
lesson organization and how you can structure your own lessons for maximum impact
and coherence.
4. Teacher's Classroom Management and Student Engagement: What was the overall
level of student engagement during your observations? What did the teacher do, say, or
write to get and keep students engaged? Observe how the teacher manages classroom
behavior and maintains a positive learning environment. Take note of strategies
employed to address disruptions or encourage student participation. Consider how you
can adapt these techniques to ensure an orderly and conducive classroom atmosphere.
I enjoyed the engagement the students put out in this lesson, they genuinely seemed
engaged and rightfully so because they got to read at their own pace since at first only
volunteers came out and then after that they prepared themselves for when they got picked.
The teacher's classroom behavior was also well written because she managed to keep the
class to a normal volume and did not allow it to become disruptive even though there were
students talking in their group discussions towards the end. This created a positive learning
environment without a hostile manner but simply by being friendly and reminding the
students what was expected from them.
6. Assessment and Feedback: Examine the teacher's methods for assessing student
understanding and providing feedback. Reflect on the effectiveness of formative and
summative assessments in gauging student progress. Consider how you can integrate
various assessment strategies into your teaching to support student learning.
7. Cultural Sensitivity: Pay attention to how the teacher incorporates cultural sensitivity
and inclusivity into the classroom. Reflect on the importance of creating an inclusive and
culturally responsive learning environment and brainstorm strategies to ensure all
students feel valued and represented.

In this lesson cultural sensitivity was also at play because this activity involved the entire
classroom the teacher it was inevitable to come across some students that struggled with
English as a second language or who struggled in general to be able to speak coherently
and at a fast pace since this was somewhat of a fast activity at some points. The teacher
assessed this is a rightful manner since she made sure to help these students in a kind
manner and guide them when it was their turn to read. If students struggled too much, then
the teacher would also read difficult parts for them.
8. Classroom Dialogue: How did the teacher interact with students? Did the teacher use
effective language and questioning strategies to encourage students to expand on their
ideas, delve deeper into topics, actively engage in listening to one another, and build
upon each other's contributions? Can you identify several specific questions or
comments made by the teacher that played a crucial role in shaping student thinking and
facilitating progress towards the learning objectives? Please describe in some detail.
9. Student Collaboration: Were there any collaborative student activities in the class, and
if so, how were they structured? Did the design effectively contribute to achieving the
learning objectives? What did you notice about student interactions in small groups?
Was the collaboration mostly surface-level, or did it demonstrate high-quality
engagement? How did the teacher support and promote meaningful collaboration among
the students? Please describe in some detail.
11. Anything Else: What other observations and reflections do you have?
