1) Are the following sentences grammatically correct? Justify.


1. I saw Mary that was standing next to my sister.
2. A letter has been sent to the employees whom were going to be made redundant.
3. Is she the ship which brings goods from China?
4. The police learned that the man who they were looking for had been seen boarding a
train at Euston.
5. The tourists visited the Royal mint, where English coin is produced.

2) Which items in bold type are not relative pronouns? Why?

1. The four team leaders,​ whoever​ the committee selects, will be at tomorrow’s
meeting.
2. The fact ​that​ unemployment is still high proves ​what​ a difficult economy this is.
3. The Kingfisher group, ​whose ​name was changed from Woolworths earlier this year,

3) Explain the choice of relative pronoun in each sentence.

4) Identify the function of the relative pronoun in each sentence.

5) Say which of the wh-clauses below are nominal relative clauses and which are
wh-interrogative clauses.
