Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions.
"A lot of organizations rely on retired seniors,” says Jobelle Duka, the
volunteer manager at Central California Food Bank, in Fresno, Calif. If you need
volunteers during a pandemic, you'll most likely have to find new, younger ones
without the kind of pre-existing health conditions that make people particularly
vulnerable to an outbreak.
In recent weeks, the food bank has seen a 50 percent increase in the number
of visitors. Duka used to need 10 volunteers a day; she now requires 30. After the
governor issued a statewide shelter-in-place order, Duka started calling around to
organizations that had volunteers they could no longer use, like hospices and
hospitals. She reached out to nearby colleges, churches and the local emergency
services office, which assigned her 12 AmeriCorps members. Duka now has wait
lists for every volunteer shift.
Don’t turn people away because of age. "The only age requirement we have is
that you can’t be under 5,” Duka says. If people over 65 want to assist, figure out
ways to protect them by assigning work they can do from home, like data entry.
"Let whole families help,” says Duka, who has seen a significant uptick in families
coming into the warehouse to fill boxes and sort through donated produce. Ask
parents to make sure their children wash their hands, wear masks and gloves and
keep away from others. "Ten-year-olds are actually really helpful," Duka says.
"That’s the age when they can start listening and following directions.”
Match type of volunteer to the job. Teenagers and children are more likely to
enjoy unpleasant tasks that many adults find off-putting, like sorting putrid
oranges from good ones, an assignment Duka almost never gives to financial
donors. Reliable, healthy young adults should take on riskier jobs like distributing
food to the hungry. Accept that most new volunteers won’t stay. Eventually,
children will go back to school, parents will return to workplaces and you’ll be left
with the demographic you depended on before the pandemic: retired seniors.
"Keep in touch with them," Duka says. "Let them know you appreciate them and
look forward to seeing them when this is all over.”

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 34 to 40.
Donating to orphanages can make a big difference in the lives of children who do not have
parents to care for them. Orphanages provide shelter, food, education, and love to children who might
otherwise be alone. Many people choose to donate money, clothes, toys, or even their time to help
support these children. Donations help pay for things like school supplies, food, and medical care,
which are all very important for a child’s growth and well-being.
One example of how donations can help is when people give money to build new classrooms or
buy computers for the children. This allows them to learn new skills and gain an education, which can
change their future. Volunteers who donate their time by teaching or playing with the children help
them feel cared for and loved. This is very important because it makes the children feel delighted and
supported.
However, it is not just about giving money. Sometimes, those generous people organize events
to collect donations or raise awareness about the needs of orphanages. These events bring communities
together and encourage more people to help. When people donate, they become part of a big team that
supports children in need and makes sure they have a brighter future. In the end, even small donations
can have a big impact, and every little bit counts.

effectively, these are all valuable skills that can help in both personal and
professional life. Many people who volunteer say that they gain confidence and
a sense of purpose from helping others.

In addition, volunteering strengthens community ties. When people work

together to solve local problems—whether it’s cleaning up a park, assisting at a
food bank, or mentoring young people—it creates a more connected and
supportive environment. This helps build trust and understanding among
community members, leading to a stronger, more resilient society. Moreover,
volunteering can offer physical health benefits. Studies suggest that those who
volunteer tend to have lower blood pressure and live longer than those who
don’t. Physical activity involved in certain volunteer activities, like planting trees
or participating in charity walks, can improve fitness as well.

In conclusion, the benefits of volunteering extend far beyond just helping

others. It’s a way to improve mental and physical health, build new skills, and
create a sense of community. By volunteering, people not only make their
neighborhoods better places to live but also enhance their own well-being.
