1. Creating a Document
This is the Adobe Photoshop home screen, displaying recently accessed files.

The "Your Files" section contains files saved to Adobe Cloud, whilst the "Deleted"
folder stores files recently removed from the Adobe Cloud. 01
Instructions:

1. After installing and opening Photoshop, create a "New File." The tabs at the top of the "New Document"
window offer various presets provided by Adobe.

2. To create a custom document, use the right panel under "Preset Details" and name your document. In
this tutorial, an A1 poster will be produced. Enter "841" for the width and "594" for the height, then set
the units to millimetres.

3. Click "Create."

4. “File”, “Save as”.

5. To place elements on your document, click on “Place Embedded” or “Place Linked”.

Descriptions:

“Place Embedded”: This places the entirety of the content within your document.

“Place Linked”: This is a file that is being work on in conjunction with the Photoshop file. This will update
as the link is saved in an alternate program (usually Illustrator).

Shortcuts:

• Zoom in and out: Alt + Scroll Wheel

• Pan left and right: Ctrl + Scroll Wheel

• Copy: Ctrl C

• Ctrl E: Merge Down

• Clip adjustment to the layer below: Alt and click the layer selection line below.

• Drawing a shape or adjusting a layer without distorting the size: hold shift and drag the corner.

Instructions:

1. Click on the "Window" tab to access all the toolbars. To add a toolbar to your workspace, navigate to
"Window”, then "Workspace”, and select "Essentials (Default)”. Whilst any workspace may be used,
"Essentials" is recommended. If needed, click "Reset Essentials" to restore the default settings.

2. Next, go to the "View" tab and select "Rulers" to assist with scaling. Change the unit of measurement by
right-clicking on the rulers.

3. To place "Guides” on the document, click and drag on the rulers. To hide the guides, drag them back to
the rulers or go to "View," then "Show", and select "Guides”.
4. Hovering over the "Move Tool" will display a small description along with a video explaining its function.
This feature works for all tools. Right-click on any tool with a small grey arrow to see additional options.
Take time to familiarize yourself with each tool.

The Toolbars on the left

will be frequently used.
1.2. Layers

Each element is positioned on its

own layer, meaning layers at the
bottom will appear beneath
those at the top.

In this example, "Color Fill 2" is

placed above the stock image.
The red box highlights the blend
modes.

To experiment with blending,

select a layer, click on the
dropdown, and explore the
various blending options.

“Multiply” is used most

frequently as it removes white
from an image.
1. The "Layers" panel includes a link button that allows the
User to select and link multiple layers. When moving one
linked element, all other linked elements will move
together.

2. The effects tab allows the User add "Styles" to layers. To do

this, select a layer, click the "FX" button, and choose
"Blending Options". Experiment with the various options to
see how they affect your image.

3. Adjustments can be added to layers, including solid

colours. Click the adjustments button, select "Solid Color,"
and select a colour, and it will create an additional layer
with the fill colour.

4. The folder icon allows The User to create folders for

grouping elements. Rename the groups by double-clicking
on the group name. Adjustments may be applied to the
above groups, affecting all elements within that group.

5. The plus icon adds a new blank layer.

6. The trash icon deletes layers, adjustments, or masks.

The red line represents the separation line
used for clipping.

The red rectangle indicates an adjustment.

To organise the layers, click on the top layer,

hold Shift, and then select the bottom layer.
This will highlight all the layers. Right-click
on one of the selected layers, choose "Color,"
and select a colour. This method helps to
visually organize your work, allowing easy
identification of which elements are
affecting specific layers.

of the image.

4. Switch to the "Move Tool" and drag the selected area.
