Zoology Lab of Fruit Flies Behavioral
belonging to the Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta. This lab will examine fruit flies under a behavioral experiment and record reactions and responses to the controlled experiment. Hypothesis: If the fruit flies are given different types of fruits (oranges, bananas, and melon), then the fruit flies will be more attracted to and eat more melon than fruit fly media. Materials: y y y y y y 14 Fruit Flies (7 males, 7 females) Plastic Tube Fruit Fly Media (banana flakes, 4 grains of yeast, 10mL of water) Slice of Orange Slice of Banana Slice of Melon
Procedure: 1. After preparing the tube for the flies environment, the first night, allow the fruit flies to consume the media. 2. Day 2 of experiment carefully put in a slice of orange into the tube. Record and observe. 3. Day 3 of experiment carefully put in a slice of banana into the tube. Record and observe. 4. Day 4 of experiment carefully put in a slice of melon into the tube. Record and observe. 5. After experimenting with all the fruits, make sure that the only food left is the media. Record and observe the last day of the controlled variable. Results: It had been observed that the fruit flies did not consume very much of the slice of orange and preferred the fruit fly media. While observing the slice of banana on day three, the flies were attracted to the banana and fruit fly media equally. On day four, the fruit flies were much more attracted to the melon than the fruit fly media.
Conclusion: Independent variable: Slices of fruit (orange, banana, melon) Dependent variable: Fruit fly media Controlled Variables: Temperature, Fruit fly Media, Lighting It is concluded that fruit flies tend to avoid citrus foods versus non acidic foods. This was concluded by the observation that the majority (estimation of 10 out of 14 flies) went to the fruit fly media rather than the slice of orange. On day three, a banana slice was used to compare against the media. It was observed that both the media and fruit were equally consumed (flies went back and forth to the media and the fruit itself). On day four, the melon slice was used. According to the recorded data, the fruit flies flew more towards the fruit than the media itself. It can be concluded that the fruit flies were more attracted to this fruit versus the orange was not because of the color, but the acidity in the fruit. This experiment revealed that fruit flies would most likely choose non acidic foods when eating.
