Activity: Investigating Digestion of Food in the Mouth

Problem: What processes happen when the food is in the
mouth?
Materials:
Piece of bread (or cracker)
Procedure:
1. Bite a piece of bread.
2. Chew the bread thoroughly. Observe the structure of parts of
the mouth that help in chewing the food.
3. Notice the changes in the taste and texture of the bread as you
chew it.
4. Record your observation.
5. Swallow the bread and observe how the bread is pushed down.

2. What is the role of saliva in the changes of taste of bread?
3. How does the tongue help in swallowing the food?
4. What process of digestion occurs in the mouth?
5. Infer what could happen next if the food is in the esophagus.

Conclusion:
Make a conclusion based on the given problem.
