Basic Arithmetic Guide
Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that deals with numbers
and basic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division. It forms the foundation for more advanced math topics.
1. Basic Operations
1. Addition (+): Combining two or more numbers to get a sum.
Example: 5 + 3 = 8
2. Subtraction (-): Finding the difference between numbers.
Example: 10 - 4 = 6
3. Multiplication (×): Repeated addition of the same number.
Example: 6 × 3 = 18
4. Division (÷): Splitting a number into equal parts.
Example: 20 ÷ 4 = 5
2. Order of Operations (PEMDAS)
The order of operations determines the sequence of solving expressions:
P - Parentheses
E - Exponents
MD - Multiplication and Division (from left to right)
AS - Addition and Subtraction (from left to right)
Example:
8 + 2 × (3 + 4) = 8 + 2 × 7 = 8 + 14 = 22
3. Properties of Numbers
1. Commutative Property:
a + b = b + a and a × b = b × a
2. Associative Property:
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c) and (a × b) × c = a × (b × c)
3. Distributive Property:
a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c
4. Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages
1. Fractions: A part of a whole, written as a/b.
Example: 1/2, 3/4
2. Decimals: A fraction written in base 10.
Example: 0.5, 0.75
3. Percentages: A fraction out of 100.
Example: 50% = 0.5 = 1/2
5. Word Problems
1. John has 8 apples and gives 3 to his friend. How many does he have left?
Solution: 8 - 3 = 5
2. A box contains 6 rows of 4 oranges each. How many oranges are there in total?
Solution: 6 × 4 = 24
