INDUSTRY PROFILE
INTRODUCTION
The abbreviation CNC stands for computer numerical controlled and refers specifically to a computer controller that reads G-code instructions and drives a machine tool, a powered mechanical device typically used to fabricate components by the selective removal of material CNC does numerically tool in the work envelope of a machine. The operating parameters of the CNC can be altered via software load program. GLOBAL SCENARIO on global scale, the machine tool industry is currently in full swing. Machine tool industry the backbone of the entire industry engineering sector is today in a position to export general purpose and a standard machine tool to even industrially advanced countries. On emphasis on expanding market share beyond the national boundaries led to the Indian machine tool industries increase exports worldwide. However with lower demand and being in transition couple implementing investment in capacities the industry could not sustain export growth of more the 10% of production, however both the segment CNC and conventional have worldwide high export orders. The Indian machine tools export in 2006 was the

performance in the CNC segment. CNC machine not only registered a growth of 60% over the previous calendar year but also increased its share in total Indian machines tools exported to 62% machining centers followed by turning centers, electro discharge machine segments accounted for nearly two-third of the total exports in 2006. In the international competitive field German manufactures proved themselves to be truly premium division performers in all disciplines in 2006 as world champion in exports, In the manufacturer of farming technology machines, global runners up in overall production, third largest in importer and the fourth most important market worldwide, no country came at all near success other than Japan. In 2006 Asia produced roughly half the entire global volume, as well as consuming on equivalent amount, Europe taking a 42% share, and USA 10%. Although Asias already was the region with the greatest dynamism in the preceding years, if disproportionately boosted its positions again in 2006. On a European basis Asian production rose by 12% and Asian consumption by 14% whereas demand for machine tool experienced vagarious growth in 2004 and 2005 in America. Europe will be getting into full swing in the current year 2007, a fact

demonstrated by the impressive upswing in domestic orders received by Europe machine tool manufactures. China and India are the main protagonists in the Asian boom flanked by South Korea and Taiwan, each of whom can also boast double figure growth in both production and consumption. In addition to them further markets such as Russia and turkey and a whole series of smaller markets are also investing in building up their respective industries. The current Indian machine tools sector is very small in comparison to the global market size, currently India ranks 19th in overall world machine tools production. While Japan, Switzerland, Germany and Italy are ahead in technology. ECONOMIC OVERVIEW The Indian economic has continued on its high growth path recording on estimated GOP growth rate of 9.4% during fiscal 2007 following the GDP growth rate of 9.0% in fiscal 2006. The highlight of the economys performance was the continued growth of the industrial sector coupled with a double digit growth in the service sector. The index of industrial production (IIP) recorded on annual avg. growth rate of 11.3% in fiscal 2007 following the growth of 8.2% in fiscal 2006. This growth was driven mainly by continued growth in the

manufacturing sector which grew by 12.3% is fiscal 2007 following a 9.2% growth in the previous year. This was supported by an increase in the growth rate of mining sector from 1.0% in fiscal 2006 to 5.1% during fiscal 2007. The electricity sector grew by 7.3% of fiscal 2007 as compared to 5.2% during fiscal 2006. The momentum of growth in the service sector (including construction) continued with 11.0% growth during fiscal 2007. Growth in agriculture and allied activities declined to 2.7% during the fiscal 2007 as compared to 6.0% in fiscal 2006 primarily on account of the uneven distribution and delay in rainfall. PRESENT STATUS: DURING the last four decades the Machine Tool Industry in India has established a sound base & there are around 450 Machine tool manufacturers with approx 150 units in the organized sector. 10 major companies contributed to almost 70% of production. Approx 75% of Indian machine tool producers have received ISO certification. Government of India owned Hindustan Machine Tools Limited [HMT] is the single largest producer with 32%Market Share of Machine tools manufactured in India. Many machine tool manufacturers have also obtained CE marketing certification, in keeping with requirements market of the European markets. The Industry has an installed capacity of over Rs10,000

million & employs the workforce totaling 65000 skilled & unskilled personnel. The Indian machine tool industry manufactures a range of products such as metal cutting & metal forming machine tools, both conventional & computer numerically controlled (CNC). Indian firms also offer special purpose machines, robotics & handling systems. Indian machine tools manufacturers association (IMTMA) believes that CNC will be the growth a driver for the machine tool industry. The machine tool industrys prospects mainly depend on growth of the Indian manufacturing/ engineering industry. The users of machines tools are mainly the automobile and ancillaries, railways, defense, agriculture, steel, fertilizer, electrical electronics, telecommunications, textile machinery, ball and roller bearings, industrials values, power driven pumps, multi product engineering companies, and consumer product industry. Many of these industry sectors are showing growth trends raising demand for machine tool industry. The demand for machine tool in India is growing rapidly since 2002-2003
12
Even better it is showing signs of sustenance that will last for next several years on account rapid surge in the manufacturing activity, especially in the automobile and auto components sectors. Indian machine tool industry has further invested in technology and human capital to greatly enhance capacity to meet the growing needs. The industry has products and technology internationals standards and is succeeding in the international market too. Besides, many multinational companies have started their manufacturing activities in the country. Some US companies and the US association for manufacturing technology ( AMT) are relatively active in the Indian market, however, companies from Germany, UK, Spain, Taiwan, Korea, China and Japan are more aggressive markets of their products. According to the Indian machine tool manufacturers association (IMTMA) the US enjoys a 15-18% market share of Indias total import of machine tools and accessories.
