ASSIGNMENT PROBLEMS FOR INTERNALS

A01 LINEAR PROGRAMMING PROBLEM

DATE OF ISSUE: 29/04/2022

DATE OF SUBMISSION: 02/06/2022

01. A company has two bottling plants, one located at Bhopal and other at Indore. Each
plant produces three drinks, A, B, C. Per day bottle production capacity is as follows:

Demand of the drinks A, B and C will respectively be Plants

20000, 40000 and 44000 bottles, during the month of
Bhopal Indore
April. Per day operating cost for plants at Bhopal and
Indore are 600 and 400 monetary units. For how A 1500 1500

Drinks
many days each plant should be run in April so as to B 3000 1000
minimize production cost and to meet customer
C 2000 5000
demand?

02. A company wishes to purchase a maximum of 3600 units of an item. Two types P1
and P2 of the item are available in the market. P1 occupies a space of 3 cubic feet
and costs ₹9 whereas P2 occupies a space of 1 cubic foot and costs ₹13 per unit. The
company cannot spend more than ₹39,000. Total available space in the company's
warehouse is 6000 cubic feet. Per unit profit margin of P1 and P2 are respectively
₹3 and ₹4. Formulate as an LPP and solve graphically to maximize the profit.

03. A garden shop wishes to prepare a special fertilizer at a minimal cost by mixing two
fertilizers, A and B. The mixture is to contain at least 45 units of phosphate, at least
36 units of nitrate and at least 40 units of ammonium. Per pound cost of A and B
are respectively $0.97 and $1.89. Fertilizer A contains 5 units of phosphate, 2 units
of nitrate and 2 units of ammonium. Fertilizer B contains 3 units of phosphate, 3
units of nitrate and 5 units of ammonium. Formulate as LPP and solve graphically
to minimize the cost.

04. A store sells two types of toys, A and B. The store owner pays ₹8 and ₹14 for each
unit of toy A and B respectively. Per unit profits on toys A and B are respectively
₹2 and ₹3. The store owner estimates that no more than 2000 toys will be sold every
month and he does not plan to invest more than ₹20,000 in inventory of these toys.
How many units of each type of toys should be stocked in order to maximize his
monthly total profit?

05. A farmer plans to mix two types of food to make a mix of low-cost feed for the
animals in his farm. A bag of food A costs ₹10 and contains 40 units of proteins, 20
units of minerals and 10 units of vitamins. A bag of food B costs ₹12 and contains
30 units of proteins, 20 units of minerals and 30 units of vitamins. How many bags
of food A and B should be consumed by the animals each day in order to meet the
minimum daily requirements of 150 units of proteins, 90 units of minerals and 60
units of vitamins at a minimum cost?

06. A house wife wishes to mix together two kinds of food, X and Y, in such a way that
the mixture contains at least 10 units of vitamin A, at least 12 units of vitamin B and
at least 8 units of vitamin C. The vitamin contents of one kg of foods X and Y is
given below:

Vitamin A Vitamin B Vitamin C

Food X 1 2 3
Food Y 2 2 1

Cost of Food X and Y are respectively ₹60 and ₹100 per kg. Formulate as LPP and
solve to minimize the cost.

07. A school is preparing a trip for 400 students. The company who is providing the
transportation has 10 buses of 50 seats each and 8 buses of 40 seats, but only has 9
drivers available. The rental cost for a large bus is $800 and $600 for the small bus.
Calculate how many buses of each type should be used for the trip for the least
possible cost.

08. A brick manufacturer has two depots, A and B, with stocks of 30,000 and 20,000
bricks respectively. He receives orders from 3 construction companies P, Q and R
for 15,000, 20,000 and 15,000 bricks respectively. The cost (in INR) of transporting
1000 bricks to the companies from the depots is given as under:

Depots
A B
P 80 40
Companies
Q 40 120
R 60 80

How should the manufacturer fulfil the orders so as to keep the transportation cost a
minimum.

09. An advertising agency wishes to reach two types of probable customers with annual
income more than one lakh rupees (target audience A) and customers with annual
income less than one lakh rupees (target audience B). The total advertising budget
is ₹2,00,000. One programme of TV advertising costs ₹50,000; one programme of
radio advertising costs ₹20,000. For contract reasons, at least three programmes
ought to be aired on TV and at most 5 on radio. Surveys indicate that a single TV
programme reaches 4,50,000 prospective target audience A customers and 50,000
target audience B customers. One radio programme reaches 20,000 prospective
target audience A customers and 80,000 target audience B customers. Determine
the media mix to maximize the total reach.

10. A man rides his motorcycle at the speed of 50 km/hour. He has to spend ₹2 per km
on petrol. If he rides it at a faster speed of 80 km/hour, the petrol cost increases to
₹3 per km. He has at most ₹120 to spend on petrol and one hour’s time. He wishes
to find the maximum distance that he can travel. Express this problem as a linear
programming problem and solve it graphically.
