Over the past few decades, the term ‘Hallyu’, which translates to “Korean Wave”, has made its way to
the global stage. The rapid growth of the Hallyu market owes its success to meticulously crafted domestic
cultural strategies and unwavering government support. Following the Asian financial crisis in 1997, President
Kim Dae-jung envisioned a national cultural strategy to revive the economy. Since then, South Korea’s cultural
industry has been on an upward tendency. Amongst the latest ranking of most-subscribed-to YouTube
accounts, BLACKPINK secures the global top spot of artists, followed by BTS in second place and Justin

Bieber in third place. The exportation of cultural industries vividly showcases the escalating influence of
Hallyu, now a trump card for South Korea in improving its soft power.
BLACKPINK’s recent presence at Buckingham Palace is not the first time South Korean idol groups
have stepped onto the diplomatic stage. Thanks to the huge fan base and influence of these groups, they have
become a common sight before foreign affairs visits and leader summits. Back in May 2022, BTS held an
audience with US President Joe Biden at the White House, discussing matters concerning anti-Asian hate and
racial discrimination. According to the ‘2021 National Image Survey’ by the South Korean Ministry of Culture,
Sports, and Tourism, a striking 80.5% of foreigners positively evaluated South Korea’s national image.
Undoubtedly, the Hallyu wave molds South Korea’s national image on their political and cultural fronts.

Spoken by 68 million people in the world, Italian is the only official language of two countries (Italy
and...can you guess the second one? The answer is at the end of this passage!) and one of the official languages
of the European Union, the Vatican, and Switzerland.
As we have mentioned before, from a linguistic perspective Italian is a neo-Latin as known as romance
language, and its history is intertwined with poetry and literature. We owe to Dante Alighieri and his Divina
Commedia - written in his native Florentine language - the standardization of Italian, which soon became the
commonly spoken language among educated people all over the not-yet-become country.
Despite its celebrity, Italian is not the only language spoken in Italy. The Italian state recognizes not
less than 12 linguistic minorities, even though only three are actually in use in public schools in the areas of
interest: French in the Valle d’Aosta, German in the Bolzano province, and Slovenian in the Trieste province.
In addition, Italy is the land of another great linguistic abundance: dialects. According to the UN, 29
dialects are spoken in the country, with the National Statistic Institute estimating that 14% of Italians only speak
a local dialect, and another 32,2% alternatively use Italian and a dialect depending on context.
The mix of Italian and dialects is not only part of the daily lives of many Italians, but also influences a
big part of Italian literature both of ancient and modern times. Some examples include Carlo Goldoni, Carlo
Emilio Gadda or, more recently, Andrea Camilleri, author of the Commissario Montalbano saga.
And now, the solution to our riddle is…the little Republic of San Marino! Did you guess?

Nguyen Du is a celebrated Vietnamese poet who wrote in Chữ Nôm, the ancient writing script of Viet Nam. His
poetry is celebrated for the directness of its language and of its metaphors. Despite a number of Vietnamese
poets pre-dated him, Nguyen Du is considered by many Vietnamese to be the founding-figure of Vietnamese
literature. His epic poem Truyen Kieu (The Tale of Kieu), relating the brief and tragic life of a Vietnamese girl,
is considered as a masterpiece.
Nguyen Du was born in 1765 in Tien Dien village, Nghi Xuan district, Nghe Tinh province, Viet Nam. By the
age of 13, Nguyen had lost both of his parents, and for most of his teenage years he lived with his brother or
with his brother-in-law.
At the age of 19, Nguyen passed the provincial examination. After that, he was appointed to the position of a
military advisor in the Trinh army. After the Trinh Lords were defeated in 1786 by Nguyen Hue, Nguyen Du
refused to serve in the new administration. He was arrested and held for some time before he moved back to his
native village in the northern part of the country.
Later, when yet another warlord, Nguyen Anh, ruled Viet Nam in 1802, Nguyen Du agreed to serve in his
administration. At first, he was given his old post of military advisor but after a decade, he was promoted to an
ambassador to China in 1813.
While in China, he discovered and translated the Ming dynasty era tale "Kim Van Kieu" that would become the
basis for the Tale of Kieu. He was later appointed to two more missions to Beijing, but before he could depart
for the last one, he died of a long illness for which he refused treatment in 1820.
Nguyen Du's father worked as a minister for the Lê dynasty, and his family did well during this time. However,
Nguyen Du spent much of his life feeling guilty because he worked for a new ruler who took over, and he
thought this was a betrayal of the true leaders of Viet Nam. He believed this brought dishonour to him and his
family.

The pollution of our atmosphere arises from human activities, notably the emission of greenhouse gases through
actions like agriculture, transportation, industry and household operations. Waste disposal also contributes
significantly. Air pollution has a tremendous impact on human health and nature.
About 50 per cent of the world’s waste is not managed properly. Unfortunately, a part of this mismanagement

Giáo viên: Phạm Thị Điều

Trường THPT Số 2 Mộ Đức
involves open dumping and burning. When waste is disposed of in this manner, it releases harmful substances
into the air. This can significantly impact both our health and the environment, making it difficult to breathe,
and worsening existing health problems. That’s why we need to manage our waste properly by recycling,
composting, and safely treating waste.
Informal workers in the waste management sector, including children, are sometimes hired to collect, sort or
dispose of waste in unsafe conditions. When waste is managed in an unsafe manner, it can release toxic
chemicals into the air and water, putting these workers and their communities at risk. When UNEP assists local
waste management teams in improving their practices, it directly benefits these informal workers and their
families and communities as well.
When it comes to waste management, it’s not only up to individuals. Companies and governments also make a
significant impact. Companies can use less packaging and create products with reduced waste. They can design
their products to be easily recycled, and support regulations for improved waste management. Governments also
play a crucial role. They can establish strong regulations to prevent dumping and burning. By investing in
better waste handling methods, they contribute to everyone breathing cleaner air and enjoying a safer
environment.

President Ho Chi Minh was a great leader of Vietnam. He was born in 1890 in a small village in central
Vietnam. As a young man, he traveled to many countries to learn about the world, and to find ways to vanquish
the French colonial empire and the American Empire, who attacked his country.

made great progress in education. The literacy rate increased from just 10% in 1945 to over 90% by the time of

foreign attack.

When the British transport minister presented a watch to a Chinese official, her act was described by BBC as a

for gifts to Chinese business associates and friends? The answer lies in the Chinese language.

Giving someone a clock or a watch as a present is traditionally a taboo in Chinese culture due to “giving a
clock" and "attending a person's funeral" having the same pronunciation, regardless of the different written
characters. Therefore, avoiding presenting a gift which has “the same pronunciation of any unlucky meaning” is
important in building relationships with Chinese people.
Gifts are presented with two hands in China. The receiving person may decline the gift at first (or even up to
three times). It is part of the custom for Chinese to do so as they consider themselves not worthy of the gift.
However, do not withdraw the gift as your persistent trying will persuade the Chinese into accepting your gift.
If presenting organisational gifts, it is done during a toast or at the end of a meal, just prior to departure. In
modern time China, sometimes a business meeting is planned on short notice and can be quite short. In this
case, organisational gifts are exchanged after the first speaker of meeting parties or just before the end of the
meeting.
