What is Windows 10?

Windows 10 is Microsoft’s current operating system for laptops and computers.
Launched in 2015, it builds on Windows 7 with hundreds of handy features including
Cortana, Microsoft’s voice assistant, an app store that makes it easy to quickly download
programs and a faster web browser called Microsoft Edge.

Can Windows 10 be installed on any laptop?

There are minimum hardware requirements for Windows 10 to run on a laptop or
desktop computer. You’ll need a 1GHz or faster processor, 2GB of RAM, at least 20GB
of space on your hard drive.
You can check your processor and RAM by pressing the Start menu and right
clicking on Computer from the right-hand side of menu.
Choose properties and then check the information display. To confirm how much
storage space you have, press the Start Menu, and click on Computer then under Local
Disk you’ll be able to see how much free space you have.

Installing and Configuring of Device Drivers

Learning Objectives: After reading this information sheet, the trainee is expected to:

1. Identify the possible sources for the driver.

2. Recognize what device driver is.
3. Appreciate the importance of understanding the driver installation process.

Technical Terms

• Configuration is the way a system is set up, or the assortment of components that
make up the system.
• Drivers are small software programs that help the operating system use or “drive”
the device.

Device Drivers

A device driver is a computer program that controls a particular device that is

connected to your computer. The main purpose of device drivers is to provide
abstraction by acting as a translator between a hardware device and the applications or
operating systems that use it.

When the operating system is successfully installed, you’ll need to configure the
devices such as Video Cards, Network Interface Cards, Sound Cards, etc. by installing
the device drivers of each. In many cases, if Windows recognizes the device, drivers will
be installed automatically. In some cases, generic drivers are installed so that the devices
will work properly.
The procedures listed below describe how to obtain and install drivers for hardware
devices on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer.

55
OPERATION SHEET 3. 4 Obtaining and Installing Drivers for Hardware Devices
Step 1: Determine the Hardware Manufacturer

If you do not know

the manufacturer of the
device for which you want
to install the driver, follow
these steps to determine
the manufacturer:

1. On the desktop, right-

click My Computer, and
then click Manage.

2. Under System
Tools, click Device
Manager. The
devices that are
installed on the

Testing Installed Equipment / Devices (Components)

It is important to have a good understanding of the health and safety regulations
from early on in your career, so that you understand the good practices demanded by
law. You need to:
✔ report any accidents
✔ take reasonable care of your own health and safety when moving heavy
components
✔ not cause any electrical hazards
✔ make sure that workstations meet safety requirements.

66
You need to adhere to health and safety regulations as they will help to protect you
and others and will avoid any unnecessary legal action for reckless and unsafe working
practices.

Software Tools

Like hardware tools, there are a variety of software tools that can be used to help
technicians pinpoint and troubleshoot problems. Many of these tools are free and several
come with the Windows operating system.

Disk Management Tools

Software tools help diagnose computer and network problems and determine which
computer device is not functioning correctly. A technician must be able to use a range of
software tools to diagnose problems, maintain hardware, and protect the data stored on
a computer.

You must be able to identify which software to use in different situations. Disk
management tools help detect and correct disk errors, prepare a disk for data storage,
and remove unwanted files.

The following are some disk management tools:

● FDISK: A command-line tool that creates and deletes partitions on a hard drive.
The FDISK tool is not available in Windows XP, Vista, or 7. It has been replaced
with the Disk Management tool.
● Disk Management Tool: Initializes disks, creates partitions, and formats
partitions.
● Format: Prepares a hard drive to store information.
● ScanDisk or CHKDSK: Checks the integrity of files and folders on a hard drive by
scanning the file system. These tools might also check the disk surface for physical
errors.
● Defrag: Optimizes space on a hard drive to allow faster access to programs and
data.
● Disk Cleanup: Clears space on a hard drive by searching for files that can be
safely deleted.

67
● System File Checker (SFC): A command-line tool that scans the operating
system critical files and replaces files that are corrupted.

Use the Windows 7 boot disk for troubleshooting and repairing corrupted files. The
Windows 7 boot disk repairs Windows system files, restores damaged or lost files, and
reinstalls the operating system.

Test Procedures

A test procedure is a set of steps to guide you through what needs to be done to
thoroughly test the installation. It is designed to help you work more effectively and to
make sure you test everything that needs testing.

Test procedures are created in-house and could include these steps:

1. Gathering test information. The first step is to run the tests required by the procedure
and find out what happens. You should record all the results of your tests in a log so
that you know which pass, and which fail, thereby requiring further action.

2. Validating the test information. The next step is to check the data you gathered from
the tests to make sure it is correct. This is usually done by running the tests again.

3. Responding to test information. This step is important because you need to be able
to recognize when a test shows problem or is successful. For example, if ping is used
to test a network connection then ‘Request timed out’ shows the test was not
successful.

4. Checking specification. The final step is an important end to testing. You need to
check the specification for the installation to make sure that it has been met. For
example, if a user requested an upgrade to make their display run at 1920 x 1200, then
the ICT professional should check that the graphics card and screen can do this.

Determining Drivers version using Device Manager

You can have Windows automatically download recommended drivers and detailed
information for your hardware and devices. This is a good way to make sure all your
hardware and devices work properly.

68
Drivers and information
Windows can find and download two kinds of updates for devices connected to your
computer:

● Drivers. A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with

hardware devices. Without drivers, the devices you connect to your computer—for
example, a mouse or external hard drive—won't work properly. Windows can
automatically check if there are drivers available for new devices that you connect
to your computer.

For hardware that you've connected to your computer in the past, updated drivers
might become available at a later date; but those drivers aren't installed
automatically. To install these optional updates, go to Windows Update in Control
Panel, check for updates, and then view and install driver updates that are
available for your computer.

● Information. Windows can download high-resolution icons for many hardware

devices that you connect to your computer, along with detailed information about
them, such as product name, manufacturer, and model number—even detailed
information about the sync capabilities of a device. These details can make it
easier for you to distinguish between similar devices that are connected to your
computer, such as different mobile phones.

OPERATION SHEET 3.5 Determining Driver Version

To determine the driver version for a piece of hardware with Device Manager, use
these steps:

1. Open Start.
2. Search for Device Manager and click the top result to open the experience.
3. Expand the branch for the device that you want to check the driver version.
4. Right-click the device and select the Properties option.

69
Source: Windows Central

5. Click the Driver tab.

6. Check the installed driver version of the device.

Once you complete these steps, you'll know the current driver version, which you can
check against the version number available on your manufacturer support website to
determine if Windows 10 is using the most up-to-date release.
Alongside the driver version, using the "Driver" tab, you can also find out other useful
information, such as the date when the current version of the driver was installed, and if

Application Software License Agreement

Learning Objectives: After reading this information sheet, the learner is expected to:
1. Discuss the software installation guide
2. Identify the importance of knowing the Software License Agreement
3. Enumerate the different type of License Agreement

Technical Terms

• Software License - is a legal instrument governing the use or redistribution

of software. (en.wikipedia.org)
• Installation Program - also called a "setup program" or "installer," it is
software that prepares an application (software package) to run in the
computer. (www.pcmag.com)

Software Installation Guide

Most modern software will come with an installation program that when invokes
will lead the installer through the installation process. This type of program is designed to
make the installation process as simple and error free as possible. The names given to
this installation program are usually setup or install.

Before carrying out an installation it is always useful to read the getting

started documentation that comes with the software. This documentation will also be on
the CD. As well as this documentation, it is useful to review the readme text files on the
CD. These usually contain last minute information about the software product that may
assist with the installation.

94
Software License Agreement

A software license agreement is the legal contract

between the licensor and/or author and the purchaser of a
piece of software which establishes the purchaser's rights. A
software license agreement details how and when the
software can be used and provides any restrictions that are
imposed on the software. A software license agreement also
defines and protects the rights of the parties involved in a clear
and concise manner. Most of software license agreements are
in digital form and are not presented to the purchaser until the
purchase is complete.

Types of Licenses

1. Proprietary License

Most software licenses are "proprietary" licenses, meaning the software publisher
grants a license to use one or more copies of software, but that ownership of those copies
remains with the software publisher. The user must accept the license before they are
permitted to use the software.

2. GNU General Public License

These are agreements under which much "open source" software is licensed. End
users may do things like change the source code, but any refinements of the software
must also be made available under a GNU GPL license. Often referred to as "free,

95
copyleft" licenses, the software may or may not be distributed for a fee - "free" refers to
the ability of users to change and distribute modifications of the software, not to cost.

3. End User License Agreement (EULA)

An End User License Agreement (EULA) is a legal contract between a software

application author or publisher and the user of that application. The EULA, often referred
to as the "software license," is similar to a rental agreement; the user agrees to pay for
the privilege of using the software, and promises the software author or publisher to
comply with all restrictions stated in the EULA. The user is asked to indicate they that
"accept" the terms of the EULA by opening the shrink wrap on the application package,
breaking the seal on the CD case, sending a card back to the software publisher, installing
the application, executing a downloadable file, or by simply using the application. The
user can refuse to enter into the agreement by returning the software product for a refund
or clicking "I do not accept" when prompted to accept the EULA during an install.

4. Workstation Licenses

These are licenses that permit the installation of an application on a single

computer. You may not install the software on more than one machine unless you
purchase a license for each additional machine. Most workstation license agreements
allow you to make a single backup copy of the software as long as that backup copy is
used only to restore the software onto the same machine, or a separate machine if the
software is removed from the original computer.

5. Concurrent use license

These are licenses that permit you to install the software onto multiple machines
as long as the number of computers using the software at the same time does not exceed
the number of licenses which you have purchased. Concurrent use licenses are usually
used in conjunction with "license manager" software that prevents the number of licenses
from being exceeded. At UNCG, ITS uses KeyServer software that monitors and controls
the use of concurrent use licensed software.

96
6. Site licenses

A site license permits the use of software on any computer at a specified site.
Unlimited site licenses allow the installation of software on any number of computers as
long as those computers are located at the specified site. Some site licenses permit the
installation on computers owned by a particular entity (such as a university) regardless of
the physical location. Some vendors refer to their licenses as site licenses but restrict the
number of computers on which the software may be installed. The only way to know for
sure is to read the license specifics.

7. Perpetual licenses

These are licenses without expiration dates, which permit use of the software
indefinitely, without requiring a recurring fee for continued use. Most software that
individuals buy for use on their home computers are perpetual licenses.

8. Non-perpetual licenses

These are licenses that "lease" the software for use for a specified period of time,
usually annually or sometimes bi-annually. Users are required to remove the software
from their computer if they cease paying the license fee.

9. License with Maintenance

Some license agreements allow the user to purchase "maintenance" or "software

assurance" along with the original license fee, which entitles the user to receive new
versions of the software for one to two years until the maintenance agreement expires.

Installing Application Software

Your computer allows you to do some amazing things. Digital photo editing,
sophisticated computer gaming, video streaming—all these things are possible because
of different types of software. Developers are always creating new software applications,
which allow you to do even more with your computer.

102
Installing from a CD-ROM
From the mid-1990s through the late
2000s, the most common way to get new
software was to purchase a CD-ROM. You
could then insert the disc, and the
computer would walk you through the
installation.
Now, almost all software has moved
away from this model. Many new
computers no longer include a CD-ROM for
this reason. However, if you do need to
install software from a CD-ROM, simply
insert the disc into your computer, then
follow the instructions.

Installing software from the Web

Today, the most common way to get new software is to download it from the
Internet. Applications like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop can now be purchased
and downloaded right to your computer. You can also install free software this way.

The installation file will be

saved to your computer in .exe
format. Pronounced dot e-x-e,
this is the standard extension for
installation files on Windows
computers. You can follow the
steps below to install an
application from an .exe file.

should have a list of computer requirements. Check the box, case, or packaging of your
CD.

Using a Browser

1. Open a browser and select a game you want to install.

2. Download your game. Double-click your game's name in the left-hand toolbar, then

any running programs, browsers, and apps.
2. Insert the game disc into your computer. Do so by placing the CD or DVD into your
computer's disc drive with the label face-up.
3. Click Yes if prompted. Sometimes, Windows will ask you to confirm an application's
legitimacy before opening it. If this happens, click Yes to proceed with opening the
installer window.
If the installer window doesn't open, open Start, click the File Explorer icon, click This PC,
and double-click the disc's name below the "Devices and drives" heading.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions. Each game's setup will vary slightly from other
games, but you'll typically have to do the following (not necessarily in order):
● Select a setup language and click Next.
● Select the I agree option for the terms of use, then click Next.
● Select an installation location, then click Next.
● Select shortcut options, then click Next.
● Enter the game's key, which is usually found on the back of the CD's case or in
the manual.

5. Click Install when prompted. This will begin the installation process. When it completes,
you'll see an icon appear on your desktop if you chose to create one.

6. Click Finish. Doing so will close the setup window; for some games, this will also launch
the game.
