Filipino Culture and Society

Society (NEDA) - Filipino society values tradition, collectivism, and social harmony. Filipino
society is characterized by its interconnectedness, with strong family bonds, religious
observances, and communal cooperation playing significant roles.

Culture (Britannica)- culture in the Philippines is a product of a rich history influenced by

indigenous practices and external influences from Spanish and American colonization. It
encompasses traditions, language, arts, cuisine, clothing, and rituals that shape a community’s
way of life.

Overall, Society establishes the framework for coexistence through rules and systems,
while culture defines the identity and shared experiences of individuals within that
framework. - ANDREA

Topic: The Filipino Culture and Traditions (Part 02)

Filipino Culture and Traditions

 Culture refers to the collective beliefs, customs, values, and social behaviors that define
the way of life of a particular group of people. It encompasses language, religion, art,
cuisine, social norms, and traditional practices passed down through generations.
Filipino culture is characterized by strong family ties, religious devotion, hospitality, and a
deep sense of community.
o Example: The concept of Bayanihan, where communities come together to help
a family move their house, reflects the Filipino culture of communal unity and
cooperation.
 Traditions are specific practices or rituals that are often linked to cultural beliefs and
historical experiences. Traditions are tangible expressions of culture that are observed
during celebrations, religious ceremonies, or family gatherings. They are typically
passed down from generation to generation.
o Example: Celebrating Simbang Gabi (a series of dawn masses) during the
Christmas season and enjoying a Noche Buena feast with family are well-known
Filipino traditions rooted in religious and familial values.

In short, culture is the overarching way of life that defines a society, while traditions are the
specific customs and practices that bring that culture to life. ANGEL
