The diphthong /ɪə / and /uə/ ear or tour

“ere” - here, severe


“ear” - hear, dear, tear, pear, “ure” - cure, pure, sure.
“eer” - cheer, deer. “ur” +vowel - jury, fury, during.
“ier” - pier, cashier. others: poor, moor, tour(ist), Europe.
“er+ vowel - era, hero, period, serious.
Others: theory, museum, theatre, idea, beard, real.
/ɪə/
• Fear has a quick ear.

• Experience is the mother of wisdom.

/uə/
•Her remarks were in very poor taste.
•I'm curious to know what she said.
•What sort of fuel do these machines need?
The diphthong /eə/

“are” - care, fare, prepare.


“air” – air, chair, hair.
“ar” + vowel - vary, Mary, parents, variant.
“ear”- bear, wear, tear, swear, pear, where,
there.
• An old fox is not easily snared.

• Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

• If you run after two hares, you will catch neither.

• Take care of the pence and the pounds will take care
of themselves.
