LITTLE KNOWN AVIATION HERO

Celebrated for inventing over twenty space-age aircra", Ke#y Johnsons legacy looms large. A true story of the American Dream, Clarence Ke#y Johnson rose $om rags to riches purely on inte#igence, ingenuity, and vision.
Kelly Johnson is my all-time aviation hero, said speaker, 2Lt. Todd Bachmann in his presentation at
the June Squadron meeting. Johnson, a Lockheed aviation legend, won nearly 50 honors and awards from 1932 to 1984. In WWII, he helped Lockheed to design Americas rst 400 mph airplane, the P-38. He served the company as ight test engineer, stress analyst, aerodynamicist, weight engineer, and in 1938 he became Chief Research Engineer. In 1956, he became the Corporate Vice President for Research, and in 1958 he became Vice President for Advanced Development Projects with Skunk Works,an organization he designed to work outside the usual rules for unusual results. His talent, diligence, and leadership won him a seat on the Board of Directors in 1964 and Senior Vice President of Lockheed in 1969. Even after retirement he continued to serve as a consultant, and in June of 1983 the research facility was renamed Kelly Johnson Research

NOTES FROM THE MIDDLE EAST 1Lt. Jennifer Kauffman enjoyed a warm send off to duties overseas as CC Maj. Bob Smith at the June squadron meeting presented her with a huge cake decorated to look like camouage out of respect for her service as a SSgt with the Wyoming Air National Guard. A note from Jennifer tells of her duty there and the humble feelings that overcome her when she attends Fallen Comrades Ceremonies. All the U.S. and coalition forces line up along the roadside on the base and trucks carrying the cofns drive down the middle of the road while troops salute the ag-draped cofns, she wrote. The cofns are then loaded onto an aircraft and the fallen soldiers are own back to the U.S. Within the rst twenty days of duty Jennifer has witnessed three such ceremonies. Jennifer stays busy working twelve hour shifts seven days a week working for six squadrons. She keeps up with CAP Jeffco Senior Squadron events on the Internet when she is not studying for her college class or working out to stay t.

Every activity in Civil Air Patrol requires team effort. One important aspect of volunteering is being involved. Getting to know others makes the team effort more enjoyable and makes the activity run smoothly. Our CC, Maj.Bob Smith, wants every position to be three deep, that is three people can step up to serve at each of the positions so necessary to fulll a SAREX or a REDCAP. This column is designed to: acquaint you with other leaders who presently serve the squadron, and spark your own willingness to serve in an area of your interest and/or expertise.

Crowds thronged around unusual aircraft, food kiosks, amusement attractions, and organizations that contribute to safety and search and rescue efforts. Warbird rides thrilled aviation enthusiasts. Dogs, great and small, sought shade under a friendly wing, grandmas held their precious charges, and folks brought their elderly parents out for a stroll around the aviation festival.
