Unit 1 Basic Legal Terms

- Verdict: An opinion or decision made after judging the facts that are
given, especially one made at the end of a trial.

- Legal System: The organizations and people in a country or area who work in
the area of law.

- Court: A place where trials and other legal cases happen, or


the people present in such a place, especially the officials and those deciding if
someone is guilty.

- Complaint: A statement that something is wrong or not satisfactory.

- Paralegal: Someone who works in a law office, or a


company's legal department, and has some legal training, but does not have all
the qualifications to be a lawyer.

- Plaintiff: Someone who makes a legal complaint against someone else in court.

- Jury: A group of people who have been chosen to listen to all the facts in
a trial in a law court and to decide if a person is guilty or not guilty, or if
a claim has been proved.

- Attorney: The top legal officer in some countries, whose job is


to provide legal advice to the government and to represent the government.

- Defendant: A person in a law case who is accused of having done


something illegal.

- Judge: A person who is in charge of a trial in a court and decides how


a person who is guilty of a crime should be punished, or who
makes decisions on legal matters.
