If the growth is continuously increases or decreases constantly on original value is called linear growth
or linear depreciation.
Ex: 1. If a person withdraws an amount of 20$ every year from his account which consists 1000$.
Then after n years the amount in the bank will represents a linear depreciation it denotes an equation
that the amount in the bank after nyears is x=1000−20 n
2. If the charge for travelling a person x miles is represented asC=100+10 x . Where 100 is the
minimum charge and $10 for each mile he travels, it is a linear growth.
But if the growth is increase or decrease on the final value is called exponential growth or exponential
decay.
Ex: 1. If the amount in the bank is doubled every month it is exponential growth it is represented by
the equation A=x ( 2 )t where A=¿ amount after t years & x is initial amount And t is number of
months
1. If the initial population of rats was 20 and grew to 25 after the second year which of the following
functions best models the population of rats Pwith respect to the number of years t if the population
growth of rats is considered to be exponential?
2. If the initial population of pandas was 100 and grew to 125 after the first year. What is the function
best models the population of pandas P with respect to the number of years t if the population
growth of pandas is considered to be linear?
3. The population of trees in a forest has been decreasing by 6% every 4 years. The population at the
beginning of 2015 was estimated to be 14,000. If P represents the population of trees t years after
2015. Which of the following equations gives the population of trees over time?
t t
A) P=14000 ( 0.06 ) 4 B) P=14000+(0.94 )(4 t ) C) P=14000 ( 0.94 )4 t D) P=14000 ( 0.94 ) 4
4. A scientist counts 80 cells in a petri dish and finds that each on splits into two new cells every hour.
He uses the function A ( t )=c r t to calculate the total number of cells in the petri dish after ‘ t ’hours.
Which of th following assigns the correct values of ‘ c ’ and ‘ r ’ ?

5. Of the following scenarios, which one would result in linear growth of the square footage of a store?
C) The owner expands the store by 5% of the original square footage each year
D) The owner alternately adding 200 Sq.ft one year & 300 Sq.ft the next year
