Subject: Journalism I: Introduction to Journalism Unit: Interviewing Skills Lesson: MTVs Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside Name:

Elise Taylor Grade: 9th-11th Time Frame: One day Rationale Why are you teaching this lesson? What is the purpose of this learning activity? Where might this lesson fall in the context of a larger unit? The main purpose of this lesson is for students to develop their observation skills for when it comes time to conduct their own interviews. Additionally, it will be an important opportunity to watch how a professional interview should be conducted. One of the best ways for students to learn how to interview is by watching more experienced professionals interview interesting people. By watching this video, students should better understand that the interviewing process doesnt need to be awkward or uncomfortable. Also, its okay to ask difficult questions in order to gain the information you need as a journalist. The video should show students how to maintain control over an interview and how to tailor questions based on the reactions of the person being interviewed. Objectives Communicate a clear idea of what the student should be able to do, understand, or care about. Students should be able to: 1. Record observations from a televised interview 2. Analyze the importance of these observations 3. Determine when/if its necessary to redirect the interview (revise questions, alter tone or style of conversation) 4. Determine questions based on relevance and purpose of the overall story Questions to Consider: 1. How do we use observations to make sense of the world around us? 2. What strategies can you use to control the direction and purpose of your story during an interview? Resources This lesson will require the use of paper, a writing utensil, interview worksheet, a television or a computer with Internet access, an InFocus projector Sequencing Hook: Students will be given an interview scenario on the board. Based on this scenario, the student must write a brief answer to how they would handle the situation during an interview, based on what they know.

I Do It/We Do It Together: I will begin the lesson by explaining the plan for today and will provide a brief overview of what weve learned so far. Then, we will use the opening scenario question as a discussion prompt for students to explain their answers. This will serve as a pre-assessment tool for me. You Do It Alone: During this lesson, students will put their observation skills to the test. I plan to maintain a high level of student interest by having them watch an hour-long MTV interview with Lady Gaga. Students will be given work sheets to take notes. The worksheet contains different elements of an interview that students should be focused on during the video: Style, tone, environment, verbal cues, nonverbal cues, equipment, instances of modified direction, etc. Students must provide specific examples for each area. You Do It Together/You Do It Alone: Using the notes theyve written during the interview, students will work in pairs to discuss their findings and compare notes. As homework, they will individually write a brief one- to two-page, doublespaced reflection of the video describing the specific observations they made. This is due on the following class day, along with their worksheet notes. Assessment Students will be assessed according to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Amount of detail and accuracy of notes made on worksheet Meeting deadline of reflection assignment and worksheet notes Level of attentiveness during video Participation in discussion with partner Depth of critical analysis in reflection

Assessment Tools Used: 1. Scenario answers (turned in at end of class) 2. Worksheets 3. Reflections
