Praise for Invest NI performance

JOBS creation agency Invest Northern Ireland has been praised for its achievements as a government report says 7,500 jobs were promoted in the province during the last four years. Performance The Review published today by the Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO) says the agency has also increased research and development by firms it works with threefold. complimenThe tary report compiled by comptroller and auditor general Kieran Donnelly says: performance This was particularly commendable, given the previous low levels of research and development investment in Northern Ireland and the present difficult economic climate. Welcoming the findings Invest NI chief Alastair executive Hamilton said the report was a valuable addition to taking forward the debate on how we, as a small sub-regional economy, can best deliver the support which enables our private sector to grow. In particular, it recognises that over the period of our last corporate plan, Invest NI exceeded all of its targets, many by a considerable margin, in a period when targets were more challenging and economic conditions much less favourable. As a result of our strong focus on encouraging more busi-

nesses to become R&D active, investment by companies is now at record levels and we have effectively eliminated the gap in business R&D expenditure between ourselves and the rest of the UK. The jobs promoted from 2008 to 2011 came after foreign companies decided to site new operations or expand existing commitments in Northern Ireland following offers of financial support from Invest NI. However, the report warns that fresh thinking will be required after 2013 when changes in European regulations will prevent such agencies from offering selective financial assistance to companies to help them create posts. The two ulster unionist Party leadership candidates are set for their only head-to-head debate of the campaign tonight but it will take place behind closed doors in Londonderry. The contest was sparked by

outgoing leader Tom elliott announcing his decision to step aside following the partys annual conference this weekend. Only two MLAs are in contention but, unlike many political leadership contests over the years, no one has had to slug it out under the glare of the media spotlight.

Although both Mike nesbitt and John McCallister have made separate television appearances to set out their vision for the party, uuP officers have prevented any public confrontations. Tonights meeting taking place in the Belfray Country inn in Londonderry is open to all party members but it is expected

that the vast majority of those in attendance will be from the north west. A small number of non-party guests have also been invited, but there will be no media representatives present. Turn to page 12; see pages 10 & 11
