SQL Server 2022 Developer Edition Installation on

Windows 11 or Windows 10

1) Download SQL Server 2022 Developer edition available at

https://aka.ms/sqlserver2022developer

2) Follow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdvTb7YKi6Y installation steps.

Restore Adventure Works databases.

1) Download AdventureWorks2022.bak and AdventureWorksLT2022.bak available at

https://learn.microsoft.com/sql/samples/adventureworks-install-configure?view=sql-server-
ver16&tabs=ssms#download-backup-files.

2) Rename AdventureWorks2022.bak to AdventureWorks.bak and AdventureWorksLT2022.bak

to AdventureWorksLT.bak.

3) Follow https://learn.microsoft.com/sql/samples/adventureworks-install-configure?view=sql-
server-ver16&tabs=ssms#restore-to-sql-server instructions to restore both databases.

Running SQL Server 2022 on a MAC

Option A)
Create a virtual machine either using VirtualBox, Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion or
Bootcamp. Install Windows 11 virtual machine and proceed to install SQL Server 2022
developer edition following https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdvTb7YKi6Y instructions.

Option B)
Create a Windows 11 virtual machine in Microsoft Azure and proceed to install SQL Server 2022
including management studio as per URL above. It's recommended to select VM Size A2 to keep
costs to the minimum. An A2 VM running 24h per day during an entire month is estimated to
cost 48€ / month so it's recommended to shutdown machine whenever that is not being used
(you can schedule auto-shutdown) since subscription is pay per use basis.
Option C) (recommended option)
Create a SQL Server Azure database through Microsoft Azure Portal. When creating an Azure
database don't forget to set computing resources to standard and select S0 /10 DTU / 250 GB
(currently the free SQL Azure for students). The estimated cost for this configuration is 4,21€ per
month. You can install Azure Data Studio as alternative to SQL Management studio or just use
SQL Azure Query editor directly through web browser.

Option D)
Install SQL Server on Docker as described at https://docs.microsoft.com/sql/linux/quickstart-
install-connect-docker?view=sql-server-ver15&pivots=cs1-bash.

Then connect remotely using Azure Data Studio either to restore database or to execute
transact SQL as described at https://database.guide/how-to-restore-a-sql-server-database-on-
a-mac-using-azure-data-studio/.

Import Adventure Works database to Microsoft Azure

Please follow https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/azure-sql/database/database-
import?view=azuresql&tabs=azure-powershell instructions on how to upload
AdventureWorks.bacpac and AdventureWorksLT.bacpac to the Azure storage. Both files are
available in Moodle Lesson 1 SQL folder.
