April 17, 2012 CONTACT: Leila J. Erlandson, M.A. Marketing and Communications Minneapolis Community and Technical College 612-659-6804/Leila.Erlandson@minneapolis.edu FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MCTC ANNOUNCES NEW HELLAND STUDENT CENTER GRAND OPENING MINNEAPOLIS, April 17 -- Following a dramatic renovation and expansion, Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) officially opens the doors of its new Helland Student Center and the Fine Arts Lobby to the community with a grand opening celebration May 3, 2012. Transformed to complement the overall campus, the new Center offers many expanded features including a free student health clinic; recreation center; convenience store; study, lounge and meeting spaces; juice/snack bar; and a two-story multi-purpose entertainment space that spills out into Loring Park and the college theatre. Many of MCTCs 14,000 students are quickly making the new Helland Student Center and Fine Arts Lobby their home, said Tara Martinez, Director of Student Life at MCTC. Throughout the building, students are absorbed in student government meetings, racing to write articles and meet newspaper deadlines, rehearsing for upcoming shows, or finding a comfortable space to study. One of the highlights of the new student center is the addition of a free student health clinic. Boynton Health Service at MCTC provides health care services on campus to all students enrolled at MCTC. Students can receive primary care services for common illnesses and injuries, obtain testing and receive routine medical exams. Mental health evaluation and referrals, and limited individual therapy are also offered to address issues including depression, anger and low self-esteem. In addition to meeting student and faculty needs, the new Helland Student Center and Fine Arts Lobby was designed to be an open, affordable and usable space for members of the community. We have myriad spaces ranging from high-tech conference rooms, a theatre, and a two-story multi-purpose entertainment space with seating for up to 100 people available for use by the broader community, said Martinez. Community members interested in renting space can contact Central Scheduling, Central.Scheduling@minneapolis.edu or 612-659-6893.

MCTC will celebrate the new Helland Student Center and Fine Arts Lobby at a grand re-opening offering students, faculty, and members of the community a chance to see first-hand how the Helland Student Center design meets student and community needs, said Phil Davis, MCTC President. We look forward to hosting our students and the community in this vital new space. LHB is a multi-disciplinary engineering, architecture and planning firm known for their design leadership and focus on measurable performance and Workshop Architects specializes in creating spaces for social interaction and creative expression. It was particularly important to re-connect the college to Loring Park, and Workshop Architects did a great job introducing large expanses of glass to bring an entirely new experience to the campus, said Bruce Cornwall, AIA, Director of Integrated Design with LHB, Inc., the architects of record. The three level addition and remodeling project creates an experientially rich architectural path that leads from an existing third level skyway down a grand stair through an exciting series of spaces and ultimately flows out to Loring Park at the ground level, said Peter van den Kieboom, Sr. Designer, Workshop Architects, Inc.
