Sameprocedureaseveryyear?
As competition lawyers and economists, we dont need to know Dinner for One to understand that procedure matters. Well-functioning procedures can be the sworn enemy of arbitrariness, whereas bad procedural rules may act as the literal stumbling block when justice should be served.
The proper role for competition authorities and courts as well as the adequate standard of judicial review in antitrust matters have for long been hotly debated topics, but with the imminent accession of the European Union to the European Convention on Human Rights, these discussions have become even more intense. That is why we put these issues on the menu, next to several other topics that are right up on the agenda. Luckily, there are some firmly established procedures at the St. Gallen ICF to discuss even the hot potatoes of competition law in a friendly and constructive atmosphere. Moreover, the ICF is not a Dinner for One but gathers many members of the competition community, among them some of the most important decision-makers and leading thinkers in the field, who will serve you fresh food for thought. Under these circumstances, and even though you may get served some good wine at the ICF as well, we are confident that the event will not quite as much spiral out of control as the famous Dinner for One. Rather, it will stay true to the traditional core values of this conference: academic excellence, open debates, and friendliness. In this spirit, I invite you to join us for the 19th St. Gallen ICF for a procedure that hopefully will turn out as successful as every year!
