For the past three years the technology has advanced with gathering processing and distribution of information. It has lead to enrichment of worldwide telecommunication, radio, television and launching of communication satellites. The economy is growing due to rapid technological process where the need for communicating each other has been necessary. Organization with 100 of offices spread over wide geographical area routinely expect to gather information at their remote output at the push of the button. The realization resulted telecommunication industry. In the earlier days of the communications sector was operated by government. But as the economy had its growth with more population and companies coming in the need for communicating mobiles, gathered importance. This leads to libration and privatization of economy where new companies emerged in the mobile industry. In the whole process companies like AIRTEL, SPICE, VODAFONE AND RELIANCE have taken birth. These companies have entered in to the market providing different types of services. In order to give good and accurate communication network companies had to work with the help of satellite networks. At present these are two types of satellite networks namely. in a sophisticated way of communication which has lead to development of mobile and
Global system for mobile communication (GSM) and code division multiple access (CDMA) technologies which are marketing communication network more easier.
It is one of the satellite networks which have been designed as a fully digital system. It is currently used in over 50 countries inside and outside of Europe global system for mobile communication work with the help of frequency above 1800MHz. A GSM system has up to maximum of 200 full duplex channels per cell. Each channel consists of downlink frequency from base station to the mobile station and uplink frequency from the mobile station. The mobile station is located at particular distance with communication to base station which makes the signal reach ability easier. The base station is used to announce incoming calls each mobile station monitors its base station continuously to watch for calls it should answer. At present global system for mobile communication technology is used by companies like AIRTEL, VODAFONE and SPCIE etc.. CODE DIVISION MULTIPLE ACCESS (CDMA): It is yet another method for allocating a wireless channel. It is one of the satellite networks which is used for communication purpose. It is completely different from all other allocation techniques. Code Division Multiple Access

(CDMA) is based on dividing the channel into frequency bands and optical fibers. It is typically used for wireless system with a fixed base station and many mobile stations depend on how far away the transmitters are CDMA allows each station to transmit over the entire frequency spectrum all over the time. The base station gives commands to mobile station to increase or decrease their transmission power. Companies like TATA INDICOM, RELIANCE are using this CDMA technology.

Bharti Airtel has launched an innovative mobile money platform called 'Airtel Money' in India through its wholly-owned subsidiary Airtel M Commerce Services Ltd (AMSL). Airtel users, across 300 key cities in India, would be empowered to top-up their cellphones with airtime and pay for their utility bills, recharges, shopping at 7,000-plus
merchant outlets and online transactions through this fast, simple and secure service India's fifth-largest Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) operator Aircel, has decided to renew its outsourcing contract worth US$ 100 with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to manage its mobile networks in seven circles - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Punjab, Haryana, West Bengal and Rajasthan
NSN has also bagged a contract from Bharti Airtel, the world's fifth largest telecom company, to build and operate its long-term evolution (LTE) network in Maharashtra circle. LTE is a 4G mobile broadband technology that supports services like high-speed internet and video streaming on the go. Government Initiatives The sector regulator, TRAI, has issued guidelines to all the operators to set up a complaint centre under Telecom Consumers Complaint Regulations, 2012. The centre would be responsible in acknowledging all the complaints it

receives, even if the complaint is made by a subscriber of another mobile operator. It would have a toll-free number and would be equipped with a web-based complaint monitoring system, through which the consumers can track their complaints. TRAI is also doing its bit to achieve the aim of carbon emission reduction under which operators are directed to achieve carbon reduction to the extent of 5 per cent by 2012-13, 12 per cent by 2016-17 and 17 per cent by 2018-19. With regards to these norms under 'Green Telephony', TRAI has further mandated for all the operators that at least 50 per cent of all rural towers and 20 per cent of all urban towers are to be powered by hybrid power by 2015. The government has also given its nod for the same. Moreover, the National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2012 has received approval from the Telecom Commission. It will now head to the Cabinet for further consideration and approval. The new telecom policy endorses free roaming service to telecom users while allowing them to retain their

numbers without paying extra. The new policy would also allow telecom players to exit from the business under specific conditions. Road Ahead According to ABI Research, a US-based market intelligence company specialising in global connectivity and emerging technology, the Indian handset market is poised to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.7 per cent over 2011-17, with total handset volume projected to mark 335 million units of sales by 2017. Industry experts believe that smartphone segment would be the fastest-emerging division that would even outpace the overall handset market. The segment is anticipated to account for 29 per cent of the total handset volume with 97.2 million units by 2017, registering a CAGR of around 40 per cent. A midst all the talk of slowdown in the Indian economy, telecom is one sector that has had a fairly good year in terms of subscriber additions and revenue growth in 2008.Mobile service companies have managed to add subscribers at the rate of eight million a month in 2008. This makes India the second fastest growth for mobile services in the world. However, even as this gives some reason to cheer for the telecom incumbents, there are a few trends in key metrics of the companies that suggest increasing pressure on margins. This is not the situation only this year the subscriber base of Indian telecom industry is increasing day by-day and year by year. If we just have a glance on the Indian telecom industry it is divided into 23 circles spread all over the country with 9 Operators in the country. A large population, low telephony penetration levels, and a rise in consumers' income and spending owing to strong economic growth have helped make India the fastestgrowing telecom market in the world. The first and largest operator is the state-owned incumbent BSNL, which is also the 7th largest telecom company in the world in terms of its number of subscribers. BSNL was created by corporatization of the erstwhile DTS (Department of Telecommunication Services), a government unit responsible for provision of telephony services. Subsequently, after the telecommunication policies were revised to allow private operators, companies such as Bharti Telecom, Tata Indicom, Vodafone, MTNL, Idea, Docomo and BPL have entered the space as Major Operators in India. However, rural India still lacks strong infrastructure. In 2007, an article by Business week magazine reported that India's mobile phone market is the fastest growing in the world, with companies adding some 6 million new customers a month.

The total number of telephones in the country crossed the 300 million mark on June 18 2008. The overall tale-density has increased to 36.98% in March 2009. In the wireless segment, 15.87 million subscribers have been added in March 2009. The total wireless subscribers (GSM, CDMA & WLL (F)) base is more than 391.76 million now. The wire line segment subscriber base stood at 38.22 million with a decline of 0.13 million in October 2008. Growth of mobile technology: India has become one of the fastest-growing mobile markets in the world. The mobile services were commercially launched in August 1995 in India. In the initial 56 years the average monthly subscribers additions were around 0.05 to 0.1 million only and the total mobile subscribers base in December 2002 stood at 10.5 millions. However, after the number of proactive initiatives taken by regulator and licensor, the monthly mobile subscriber additions increased to around 2 million per month in the year 2003-04 and 200405. Although mobile telephones followed the New Telecom Policy 1994, growth was tardy in the early years because of the high price of handsets as well as the high tariff structure of mobile telephones. The New Telecom Policy in 1999, the industry heralded several pro consumer initiatives. Mobile Subscriber additions started picking up. The number of mobile phones added throughout the country in 2003 was 16 million, followed by 22 million in 2004, 32 million in 2005 and 65 million in 2006. The only country with more mobile phones than India with 246 million mobile phones is China 408 million. India has opted for the use of both the GSM (global system for mobile communications) and CDMA (code-division multiple access) technologies in the mobile sector. In addition to landline and mobile phones, some of the companies also provide the WLL service.
The mobile tariffs in India have also become lowest in the world. A new mobile connection can be activated with a monthly commitment of US$0.15 only. In 2005 alone 32 million handsets were sold in India. The data reveals the real potential for growth of the Indian mobile market. In March 2008 the total GSM and CDMA mobile subscriber base in the country was 375 million, which represented a nearly 50% growth when compared with previous year. In April 2008 the Indian Department of Telecom (DoT) has directed all mobile Phone service users to disconnect the usage of unbranded Chinese mobile phones that do not have International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers, because they pose a serious security risk to the country. Mobile network operators therefore planned to suspend the usage of around 30 million mobile phones (about 8 % of all mobiles in the country) by April 30. Revenue and growth: The total revenue in the telecom service sector was Rs. 86,720 crore in 2005-06 as against Rs. 71, 674 crore in 2004-2005, registering a growth of 21%. The total investment in the telecom services sector reached Rs. 200,660 corer in 2005-06, up from Rs. 178,831 crore in the previous fiscal. Telecommunication is the lifeline of the rapidly growing Information Technology industry. Internet subscriber base has risen to 6.94 million in 2005- 2006. Out of this 1.35 million were broadband connections. More than a billion people use the internet globally. Under the Bharat Nirman Programme, the Government of India will ensure that 66,822 revenue villages in the country, which have not yet been provided with a Village Public Telephone (VPT), will be connected. However doubts have been raised about what it would mean for the poor in the country.
SAMBHRAM ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES 10
It is difficult to ascertain fully the employment potential of the telecom sector but the enormity of the opportunities can be gauged from the fact that there were 3.7 million Public Call Offices in December 2005 up from 2.3 million in December 2004. The value added services (VAS) market within the mobile industry in India has the potential to grow from $500 million in 2006 to a whopping $10 billion by 2009. On the other hand, in the mobile telephony space, Airtel controls 21.4% subscriber base followed by Reliance with 20.3%, BSNL with 18.6%, Vodafone with 14.7% subscriber base (as per June 2005 data). Cellular Telephony: The technology that gives a person the power to communicate anytime anywhere has spawned an entire industry in mobile telecommunications. Mobile telephones have become a business/economy, The most prevalent wireless standard in the world today is GSM. The GSM association (Global System for Mobile Communication) was instituted in 1987 to promote and expedite the adoption, development, deployment and evolution of the GSM standards for digital wireless communications. The GSM association was formed as a result of a European community agreement on the need to adopt common standards suitable for cross border European mobile communications. Starting of primarily as a European standard, the group special mobile as it was then called, soon came to represent the global system for mobile communication as it achieved the status of a worldwide standard. GRM is today, the worlds leading digital standard accounting for 68.5% of the global digital wireless market. The Indian government when considering the introduction of cellular services into the country, made a landmark decision to introduce the GSM standard, leap fogging obsolescent technologies/standards. Although cellular licenses were made technology
neutral in September 1999, all the private operators are presently offering only GSM based mobile services. The new licenses for the 4'1 cellular licenses that were awarded in July 2001 too, have opted for GSM technology to offer their mobile services. Cellular Industry in India: The government of India recognizes that the provision of a world class telecommunication infrastructure and information is the key to rapid economic and social development of the country. It is critical not only for the development of the information technology industry, but also has widespread ramifications on the entire economy of the country. It is also anticipated that going forward, a major part of the GDP of the country would be contributed by this sector. Accordingly, it is of vital importance to the country that there be a comprehensive and forward looking telecommunications policy which creates an enabling framework for the development of this industry. India today is emerging as one of the most important and exciting wireless markets in the world.
CELLULAR WORLD: Cellular telephones have revolutionized the communications arena, redefining how we perceive voice communications. Traditionally cellular phones remained out of hands of most consumers due to their high cost. As a result, cell phone carriers have invested time and resources into finding ways to give the systems higher capacity and thus lower cost. Cell systems are benefiting from this research and starting to develop into large-scale consumer products.

Today, cellular phones are truly consumer electronics devices with over 75 million subscribers. Since cell phones have ceased to be exclusive status symbols of high-powered lawyers and are now in the hands of millions of consumers. They are now incredibly cost sensitive. Specifically it is not the cost of the device that counts, but the cost of using the device. Today, more than ever, cellular companies are looking for ways to bring down the call cost to attain even higher market penetration, especially in metropolitan areas. In this report, we will begin by examining how eel! Phone systems work, paying close attention to details in system design that reduce cost and increase quality. After knowing about how an eel! Phone system works, we will examine the various cell phone systems in existence, examining the details of their operation and how that impacts the cost of using the system and call quality on the system. CELL PHONES: An Overview It is common knowledge that cellular phone? (Referred to as "cell'' phones from here on) are wireless phones; however, many of us have confusion about how a cell phone works.
Essentially, cell phones use high-frequency radio signals to communicate with "cell
towers" located throughout the calling area. Cell phones communicate in the frequency range of 806-890 MHz and 1850-1990 MHz for the newly allocated "PCS" frequency range.
When the user wants to make a call, the cell Phone sends a message to the tower, asking
If to the tower has sufficient resources to grant the request, a device called a "switch" patches the cell phone's signal throughout to a channel on (he "Public Switched Telephone Network"(other\vise known as P S T N). This call now takes a wireless channel as well as PSTN channel that will be held open until the call is completed.
This channel cannot be used for anyone else's call until the cell phone call is
discontinued. The above simple description of how cell phones work, we will add technical details about various facets of cell phone systems throughout the remainder of this section. CELLULAR PHONES: As the name implies, cell phone systems are made up of many small "cells". Each cell in a cell phone system represents the area served by one cell phone tower, The concept of cells is key behind the success of cell phones because by spacing many cells fairly close to each other, the cell phones may broadcast at very low power levels (typically 200m\V 1W, depending on system). Since the cell phones may broadcast at low power levels, they use small transmitters and small batteries, and thus are able to tit in a shirt pocket, unlike amateur radios can occupy a tabletop. Cells are typically spaced around 1-2 miles apart but can be spaced up to 20 miles apart in rural areas. In loaded areas with many obstacles (such as tall buildings), the cell sites may be spaced closer together, some technologies, like PCS, require closer cell spacing due to their higher frequency and lower power operation. Additionally, buildings interfere with cell signals coming from outside so many buildings have their own "micro cell1'. The Kingdome and New York subway are two examples of where micro cells are used. Micro cells may also be used to increase overall capacity within a heavily populated
SAMBHRAM ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES 14
area such as city's core downtown area. In fact, homes may have "Pico cells'' connected to the home's PSTN connection to allow the eel] phone to be used as a cordless phone.
