We are small enough to know our students personally and to create a friendly, supportive environment, yet big enough for our students to make the most of studying with a good mix of nationalities and to enjoy an active social life outside of class. ABC was set up to offer flexibility of choice, quality teaching, and a high level of personal attention. In many cases, students can build their own programme through combining different courses, activities and types of accommodation.
Our teachers are well qualified, and have a wide range of experience, not only in English-language teaching, but also in the business and academic worlds, which enables them to provide a variety of specialist courses for our clients. Most importantly, they love what they do and work very hard to help students achieve their personal goals. Im very glad to made this experience! It was a wonderful time at ABC and in Cambridge. Sarah. F, Germany
Why Cambridge?
Cambridge is a great place to be a student. If you have an image of Cambridge, it's probably one of ancient buildings, immaculate green lawns and people punting down a willow-fringed river. This is an accurate image - the city is stunningly beautiful - but there's a lot more to it than that. Cambridge is small enough to retain its community atmosphere; it is nevertheless host to a cosmopolitan range of visitors every summer. A town of bustling streets and pavement cafes, it also features green spaces and parks, and cows can be found grazing close to the city centre. It is a historic town, built by the Romans and familiar to Danes, Saxons and Normans. One of the pilgrims who set sail for America on the Mayflower was from Cambridge. Yet with all this history, Cambridge has nevertheless been the birthplace of some of the most recent scientific advances. Cambridge offers all the benefits of city life: pubs and clubs; an incredible variety of concert venues offering music for all tastes; theatres, cinemas, cafes and restaurants; a thriving central market; and a good range of shops. When you want to escape, the countryside is very close with pleasant walking and cycle routes from the city centre to villages like Coton and Madingley. Walk (or punt!) along the river from Newnham to the pretty village of Grantchester. Further afield, visit Ely to see the magnificent cathedral and absorb the unique and mysterious atmosphere of the fens. Cambridge has good road and rail links to the rest of the UK - London is only 50 minutes away by train. It is also within easy reach of all London's international airports, and there is a direct 30minute rail link to Stansted international airport.
So much to see and do: University colleges Kings College Chapel Punting Museums Shopping and markets Nightlife Cinema Theatre Concerts Sports and leisure Grantchester village Cathedral City of Ely, 15 mins London, 50 mins
All teachers are very friendly and helpful. I have liked to stay in Cambridge and I have enjoyed the English
course in your school. Thank you very much for teaching me. Erich. B, Germany

How it works: 20 lessons, morning, course: The mornings are divided into two lessons of 1.5 hours each, with a 15minute break in between. You change teachers at break, but we aim to keep the same two teachers working with you long-term. In Lesson 1 you use a main coursebook, which will provide the framework of your course, with a range of additional materials to make your lessons interesting and relevant. Because our groups are small, youll have plenty of opportunity to discuss things with your teacher and classmates. Lesson 2 is more flexible, but may be linked to Lesson 1, including vocabulary extension, spin off topics, etc but also having space for pronunciation practice, learn-to-learn skills and working on your can-do statements*, as well as having lots of speaking and listening practice.

I enjoyed the small classes at school because the teachers were able to focus on the individual problems of each student Julia. S, Germany
Pre-course assessment test & needs analysis questionnaire, based on Common European Framework of Reference Telephone assessment of speaking if requested Continuous monitoring & feedback Self-assessment folder for each student Attendance certificate showing skills levels
Each level, A1 C2, describes your ability to do certain things in English, from very basic (I can buy a meal in a fast-food restaurant) to extremely advanced (I can write long, complex reports). These are known as the can-do statements and cover all skills and different reasons for learning English social, work and study. The definitions of these levels are shown in the table on the Can Do page. Before you start your course we will ask you to complete a short test which will give us the first idea of your level. Well also ask you to write something about your job/course of study and why learning English will help you in this. If you are taking a more complicated course well also ask you to complete a self-assessment directly based on the can-do statements. Of course, well already know quite a lot about you from your emails and perhaps from meeting you when you came in to ask about studying at ABC. If an assessment of your speaking level would be helpful, well arrange a time to phone you. During your first week well check with you to see that you are comfortable and happy in your group, and will also talk to your teachers to see if they have any concerns. At this point, when you are feeling more settled, well be able to get a much better idea of your real level, and will be able to produce your Student Profile. This combines all the information we have about your past experience with English, your current and future aims, and your skill levels according to the CEFR. During your course, on a monthly basis, we update your Profile, and check that your learning is progressing satisfactorily. Your teachers continuously monitor your progress, formally through tests and less formally through observation. Homework is an important part of your course and we include this in the monitoring process. We make it easy to relate your progress directly to the CEFR and the can-do statements. Each student receives a self-assessment folder which contains real-life examples of the things you should be able to do at each level, so you can check just where you are. At the end of your course you will receive an Attendance Certificate showing your levels in the four skills and a written report if you require one, for example for your company. All students receive a Certificate, even if they are taking an external examination.

Lessons
At the Summer School the lessons are planned to be interesting and relevant to each age group. We use modern books, DVDs and audio CDs, real-life materials of all kinds, and do project work that often involves going out of the classroom and meeting English people. The teachers are young, but experienced, and know how to make learning fun as well as effective.
Key Points: 20 lessons per week (15 hours) Interesting & relevant to each age group Real-life materials Project work Learn real English
One of the main advantages of coming to a Summer School is the opportunity to learn 'real' English, and to improve your confidence and fluency, and you will find all our staff, both teachers and activity leaders, very happy to talk to you and spend time with you. TIMETABLE & TEACHING

Break
The work you do will depend on your age and level: Older students will use a lot of authentic materials on current topics as a basis for the work in these classes and use them as the starting point for discussion, writing exercises, group presentations, and so on. At this age, you are probably facing some important exams, and we can help deal with any problems you are having, whether in grammar, writing, speaking - or any other area of your English. We can also provide specific practice for students who are going to continue their education in the UK. Younger students are probably most interested in starting to use the English they are learning at school, building up confidence, and learning lots of new words. Our teachers provide lots of opportunity to practise your speaking and listening, and plan the lessons to stimulate your skills, using video, music, and project work. Although our teachers make the lessons fun, we ensure that all our courses are carefully planned to ensure that lessons are balanced and that individual needs are being met.

Afternoons
Afternoon Lessons:
10 lessons (7.5 hours) You can choose from lessons or social activities, depending on how hard you need to study! Afternoon Lessons As far as lessons are concerned, you can study more General English, perhaps working on a project or special study topic, or we can help you study for an exam different levels and interests are available throughout the summer. Small groups
Students who are continuing their education in the UK at School or College often find these lessons very helpful: we can work on Academic English, including preparation for the IELTS test if required, and can also cover subject-specific English, for example for Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Business Studies and so on. Social Activities The exact choice of activity each day depends on whats on, what our students are interested in and the weather, of course! In any case, we always include a half-day excursion once a week: to the coast, maybe, or to go bowling even a quick trip to London! It's not all work at ABC: we want you to have a good time, too. Our Social Activity staff will really help you get the most out of your stay here, whether you're interested in sport, discos, cinema or sightseeing. Everyone quickly makes friends here - we're small enough that all the students and staff know each other, and big enough that you'll always meet someone who likes the same things you do. Here are some examples of things you can do in Cambridge:

Social life
Cambridge is a great place to visit, with something for every taste and only 50 minutes from London. Our team will help you enjoy your stay to the full, and will give you all the help you need to get the most from our beautiful city and its surroundings.
A full Pre-Course Pack containing your time-table, maps and guides will be sent to you before your course begins, and when you arrive our team will deal with any questions you have and help you to book excursions and other activities, as well as dealing with practical things such as opening bank accounts.
The University of Cambridge dates back to the 13th century, which gives the town its unique atmosphere as well as providing examples of some of the most outstanding architecture to be seen anywhere in Europe. Visitors should not miss the magnificent college buildings or the beautiful 'Backs' - the lawns that sweep down to the river from the backs of the colleges. There are museums and galleries to suit every taste from the technical to the artistic. Cambridge has four theatres, two main concert halls, an 'art' cinema as well as commercial multi-screens and innumerable other venues for live performances of all kinds, including classical, jazz and the latest rock music. Those who like sport will find plenty to do: there are several swimming pools and a sports hall, as well as many fitness clubs and classes. Everyone gets on well together here so youll easily make friends and our helpful team members will make sure you can take part in the events and activities that interest you. We do not offer a ready-made social programme which you have to pay for whether you want it or not. During the summer we arrange ad hoc activities and events to suit the tastes of our students: barbeques, horse racing at Newmarket, open-air theatre in college gardens, evening punting trips, visits to traditional pubs...... we tell you the price and you can choose which youd like to join and were very happy to listen to your suggestions for things to do. Throughout the year there are weekend day trips to places interest around England, and even whole weekends away to destinations such as Scotland, Ireland and the West Country Below are some examples of excursions from Cambridge:

Student support
We offer support to all students through a range of services and facilities that aim to enhance student experience and achievement academically, professionally and personally. During your time at ABC Languages you may find that you have some general questions about your stay in Cambridge. You may need assistance with a more complex matter such as choosing the right exam to take or extending a student visa. Our Student Welfare Officer is on hand to answer your questions and is happy to assist with a range of issues. All students are given a comprehensive Student Handbook providing information that you will need to know as a student at ABC Languages.
Information for parents: ABC has been established since 1986, and as an extra assurance of quality is accredited by the Accreditation Body for Language Services (ABLS) which sets strict standards in such matters as the qualifications of staff, the organisation of the establishment and standards of accommodation and pastoral care. Your son or daughter will be in the care of a team of experienced professionals while they are here, many of whom have children of their own, and know very well the pleasures and problems of dealing with youngsters. The Teachers and Student Welfare Officer have the most day-to-day contact with the students. We always employ staff who will relate well to the students, but who have good qualifications and substantial experience. Our host-families also play an important part in looking after our students as they are often the first to know if a student is ill, or homesick, or having difficulties. We are well organised to deal with problems if they arise: any of the staff will always make time to talk to students who might be feeling homesick, or who have other problems, and we have regular meetings to discuss progress and any difficulties the staff may have noticed. As far as illness is concerned, we have an excellent Doctor just five minutes' from the School for less urgent cases, and Addenbrooke's Hospital, one of the best in the country, is only ten minutes' away although we do our best to ensure activities are safe, we can never guarantee that there won't be the occasional sprained ankle, and we'd rather be safe than sorry! The School telephone number is constantly manned by members of staff outside School hours so that we are immediately contactable in the event of an emergency. On the subject of illness, though we hope it won't happen, we do recommend that you take out medical insurance to cover your stay here. If you take a course of 20+ lessons with ABC Languages, this insurance is included at no extra cost. Students from many countries, especially those within the EU, are covered by reciprocal healthcare agreements with our government, but generally speaking, people from overseas have to pay for treatment, and even if you come from the EU, the government will only pay for your basic treatment, not, for example, for flying you home by air ambulance.

I never thought I would need to use insurance, but because my flight was delayed and there
wasnt another one for several days, I had to delay my course and pay extra money for hotels etc. Im thankful that my course had insurance included.
