Stock Exchange or Share Market or Bourse a corporation or mutual organization provides "trading" facilities - stock brokers and traders- trade stocks and other securities provide facilities - issue and redemption of securities, other financial instruments, and capital events (payment of income and dividends) the securities traded on a stock exchange : shares issued by companies unit trusts and other pooled investment products bonds trade by members only most important component of a stock market

Stock Market Index a method of measuring a section of the stock market also many indices - compiled by news or financial services firms to benchmark the performance of portfolios eg. MF Types of Indices broad-base index represents the performance of a whole stock market eg. S&P 500 Index, the Japanese Nikkei 225, the Indian Sensex , the Hong Kong Hang Seng Index , etc. proxy reflects investor sentiment on the state of the economy eg. Morgan Stanley Biotech Index consists of 36 American firms in the biotechnology industry

Requirements by Stock Exchanges includes minimum number of shares outstanding minimum market capitalization minimum annual income. companies have to meet the requirements in order to have their stocks and shares listed and traded requirements vary by stock exchange , eg. London Stock Exchange: a minimum market capitalization (700,000) 3 years of audited financial statements minimum public float (25 per cent) sufficient working capital for at least 12 months from the date of listing NASDAQ Stock Exchange: a company must have issued at least 1.25 million shares worth at least $70 million must have earned more than $11 million over the last 3 years New York Stock Exchange: a company must have issued at least a million shares of stock worth $100 million must have earned more than $10 million over the last three years
