Critical Path Method

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving a goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon..." - John F. Kennedy, May 27,1961

Critical Path Method

On July 20, 1969, just eight years after Kennedy's speech, Apollo 11 landed two men on the moon. This achievement was possible only with careful production planning that included the critical path method. NASA used the critical path method to help determine an efficient schedule for the tasks that led to the moon landing.

Critical Path Method

In any project, a number of activities are involved. Some of them are interdependent, while the others are independent. CPM is very useful tool to manage such complex projects / Activities. In this technique, better utilization of resources takes place

CPM Language
Operation (Activities): Any project involves several activities (Operations), the project can be considered as completed only when all the activities are completed. In CPM activities are shown on node (ie shown by circle ) Operation number is written inside the circle where as time required is written on left hand top corner.

Pre Operation : Two operations, of which unless one is completed, another cannot be started

CPM Language
Post Operation (POST OPR): Operations which follows the pre operation is known as Post Operation, There may be more than one pre operation Earliest Finish Time (EFT): The earliest possible time for completing any operation can be shown in a rectangle. Shown at the top right corner and outside the operation circle

CPM Language
When an operation has more than one PRE OPR the earliest finish time is the largest earliest finish of PRE OPR + Schedule time for the operation under consideration.

CPM Language
Latest Finish Time (LFT): It is the time by which the operation must be completed, so that the schedule date for completing the project is not delayed. For the Last Operation : Latest Finish = Earliest Finish For the Operations : Latest Finish = Latest Finish of Post Operation Time Required for Post Operation

CPM Language
Critical Path : A Path among the network, in which the Earliest Finish and the Latest Finish are equal. The Critical Path is represented by a double or a thick arrow line to distinguish it clearly from other path.

CPM Language
Earliest Start : In the shortest possible time by which a certain job can be completed. Earliest Time = Earliest Finish Time Operation Time Latest Start : It is the latest possible time by which the job can be started. Latest Start = Latest Finish Time Operation Time

How To Draw
List out the activities Find out Estimated time for Each Activity Calculate EST, LFT

Sequentially Complete the Process

Draw Arrow from Start Node to Next Node

Create a Start Node

Summary
Critical Path Analysis is an effective and powerful method of assessing: 1.Tasks which must be carried out 2.Where parallel activity can be carried out 3.The shortest time in which a project can be completed 4.Resources needed to achieve a project 5.The sequence of activities, scheduling, and timings involved 6.Task priorities
