ZONE COVERAGES

COVER GRAY
THEORY: COVER GRAY is a zone defense with 3 Defensive Backs (Corners and FS) protecting the outside and deep middle 1/3. We will have 4 Individuals playing the underneath zones depending on what type of pressure we bring. Our Cover Gray package is similar to a Fire Zone concept. A Fire Zone is defined as a defensive call that allows the defense to blitz and still play zone coverage behind it. We will run our 4 man pressure packages. The 4 man pressures consists of just bringing one Linebacker. RULES: It allows us to bring pressure from the middle and edge of our opponents formations. This blitz package allows us to still bring pressure, but change our coverage philosophy from a man to a zone coverage defense. We are a route reading, zone coverage defense. Our opponent receivers routes will be our players keys that determine what responsibility they have versus the pass. It also allows us to defend the deep ball better and let our personnel play a different type of technique versus the pass. In regards to coverage, the Corners will protect the deep outside 1/3s. The FS will protect the deep middle 1/3. The Dogs will protect the Curl to Flat zones. If the Dogs have a fast #2 WR to their side they will protect the Seam route of #2 as long as they can before they come off on any short routes by the #1 WR. The remaining 2 Linebackers in coverage will be the Final 3 and 3 Hole player. If we get a Doubles/4 WR formation the Linebacker playing the 3 Hole will become a Final 2/Seam player on the #2 WR. WEAKNESS: As with any 3 deep zone concept defense, the flat areas can be exploited. Any short and out patterns can also be exploited in a 3 deep coverage defense. ADJUSTMENTS: We will make only two adjustments in Cover Gray. One: If we get a 4 WR/Doubles Formation the Linebacker that is designated to be the 3 Hole player vs. any two back formations will now become the Final 2 or Seam player on the #2 WR. Two: If we get a trips formation we have to know what side the remaining RB is on. If the RB is to the 3 WR side then the 3 Hole Linebacker will always open up to the 4 WR side. If the RB is away form the 3 WR side then he will open up to the RB and WR side.

The Im Big Call tells him that he will run with the #2 receiver to his side if both the #1 and #2 receivers run vertical.

COVER RED
THEORY: COVER RED is a rotating zone defense with 3 Defensive Backs (Corners and Weak Dog) protecting the outside and deep middle 1/3 after the snap. Cover Red alerts our personnel that we will be showing a pre-snap 2 Deep alignment with the FS and Weak Dog. In Cover Red, the Weak Dog will always be the deep middle 1/3 player, and the FS will always come down and be the Seam of #2 player in the curl to flat area. We will have 3 individuals playing the underneath zones. The Strong Dog to the FS side will always be executing his blitz assignment. Our Cover Red package is just like our Cover Green package in that it is similar to a Fire Zone concept. A Fire Zone is defined as a defensive call that allows the defense to blitz and still play zone coverage behind it. We will run only our Storm Package with this coverage. These calls will always have a Check call. For example: Cyclone Check Red. RULES: It allows us to show our opponents offense a different pre-snap alignment that will hopefully create some confusion for the quarterback. It allows us to bring pressure from the edge of our opponents formations. This coverage package allows us to still bring pressure, but change our coverage philosophy from a man to a zone coverage defense. We are a route reading, zone coverage defense. Our opponent receivers routes will be our players keys that determine what responsibility they have versus the pass. It also allows us to defend the deep ball better and let our personnel play a different type of technique versus the pass. In regards to coverage, the Corners will protect the deep outside 1/3s. The FS will make a Lucy or Roger call that will determine our pre-snap 2 deep alignment. He will come down on the snap and be the Seam of #2 player in the curl to flat area. The Strong Dog is always linked to the FSs call and it alerts him to be the blitzer to the FSs call side. The Weak Dog is always away from the Lucy or Roger call and will show the 2 Deep look. He will give an Im Gone call to the Will Linebacker and work to the deep middle 1/3 on the snap. The Will to the Im Gone call side will have the curl to flat area. The SAM always goes with the Strong Dog and FSs call side, and the Will always goes away with the Weak Dog to the Im Gone call side. The Mike will make a Right or Left call to the Defensive Line so they know which way to slant on the snap. The Sam or Mike will be the Final/Stack #3 player if they are not involved in the blitz. The Mike will never give a strength call in this package. WEAKNESS: As with any 3 deep zone concept defense, the flat areas can be exploited. In Cover Red X, the Weak Dog will always be the deep middle 1/3 player, and the FS will always come down and be the Final/Stack #3 player in the middle hook area. We will have 3 individuals playing the underneath zones. The Strong Dog to the FS side will always be the Seam of #2 player in the curl to flat area. Our Cover Red X package is just like our Cover Green package in that it is similar to a Fire Zone concept. A Fire Zone is defined as a defensive call that allows the defense to blitz and still play zone coverage behind it. We will run only our Bird and Weapons Package with this coverage. Cover Red X is also the coverage package that we will run with our FS Blitz package. The FS Blitz package is known as our Weapons Package. We will still only bring 5 man pressures with the Weapons Package. These calls will always have a Check call. For example: Eagle Check Red X or Saber Check Red X. RULES: It allows us to show our opponents offense a different pre-snap alignment that will hopefully create some confusion for the quarterback. It allows us to bring pressure from the edge and middle of our opponents formations. COVER ORANGE
THEORY: COVER ORANGE or s, is a 4 Deep zone coverage. This coverage can be run versus any pro and doubles formation, as well as any offensive personnel. For example: 21, 10 or 11 personnel. Cover Orange alerts our personnel that we will be showing a presnap 2 Deep alignment. Cover Orange will only be run with a 4 man pressure. These calls will always have a Check call. For example: Buck Check Orange. RULES: It allows us to show our opponents offense a different pre-snap alignment that will hopefully create some confusion for the quarterback. It allows us to bring pressure from the middle and edge of our opponents formations. This coverage allows us to be aggressive versus the run with our safeties even though we are showing a 2 Deep look. We are great versus 4 verticals, and our 2 Deep look safeties can be extremely aggressive on the #1 receivers depending on the read of the #2 receivers. In regards to coverage, our FS will make a Lucy or Roger call to determine our 2 Deep pre-snap alignment. He will then read the #2 receiver to his side and play accordingly. The Strong Dog to the FS will be a curl to flat defender. He can play the flat route of #1 aggressively to his side. The Weak Dog away will give an Im Gone call to the Will. He will then read the #2 receiver to his si de and play accordingly. The Will to the Im Gone call side will be the curl to flat defender. The Corners will be responsible for the outside s of the field to their side, allowing them to be aggressive versus the curl, out, and post routes of #1. We will have 2 Linebackers that will not be involved in the blitz. The SAM always goes with the Strong Dog and FSs call side, and the Will always goes away with the Weak Dog to the Im Gone call side. The Sam or Mike will be the Final/Stack #3 player if they are not involved in the blitz. The Mike will make a Right or Left call to the Defensive Line so they know which way to slant on the snap. The Mike will never give a strength call in this package. WEAKNESS: The flat area to the Wills side can be exploited. ADJUSTMENTS: We will check to COVER GRAY if we get a 2 back Twins formation.
