Power Calibration
The JDSU OSA modules OSA-180/500/501/320 are based on an internal calibrated optical power meter. The wavelength dependence and the linearity of the optical power meter are calibrated in the factory. Calibration data is stored individually for each instrument in internal memory. For measurement of relative power (OSNR, channel power difference ...) no recalibration is required.
NOTE: A recalibration period of two years is recommended for absolute power measurements The abs. optical power accuracy mainly depends on the condition (insertion loss) of the optical front connector. From experiences with physical contact optical connectors Acterna recommends a regular check of the front connector.
28
1. Make a reference measurement of optical power with a DFB-laser and a calibrated power meter (e.g. OLP-55) 2. Connect DFB-source to OSA and perform a measurement. Initiate a recalibration if OSA peak level differs more than specified abs. power accuracy.
NOTE: even with bad optical front connectors accurate measurements of relative power (e.g. OSNR and power difference) can be made

Different technologies of ROADMs have different filter shapes: Flat-top and Gaussian filter shapes Cascading ROADMs will create rounded = Gaussian filter shapes Cascading ROADMs will reduce effective filter bandwidth After only 6 cascaded filters the effective filter-BW will be reduced by ~40%
1 Gaussian Filter
20 Flat-top filters
20 Gaussian Filters
In ROADM networks both, the effective bandwidth and the filter shape are unknown, this leads to an unknown noise distribution inside the channel pass band.
=> In-Band OSNR measurements need to be able to cope with any effective ROADM filter shape

Summary
Regular OSA could overestimate OSNR results by up to 10dB. Inaccurate OSNR measurements can not be used to show the margin for further system channel upgrades Even high OSNR measurements will result in service failure after system upgrade JDSUs OPS-method is the ONLY field method that provides accurate and reliable measurements of the true OSNR in all ROADM deployment scenarios. With the true OSNR it is possible to indicate system margin to predict service quality after system upgrade and to avoid system outage.
