WHAT IS BIODIESEL ?

Biodiesel is vegetable oil processed to resemble Diesel Fuel

Bio-diesel is ethyl or methyl ester of higher fatty acids and has

properties similar to petroleum diesel fuels. It is made from plant
based natural oil or animal fats. This oil has to be chemically
modified into methyl and ethyl esters by trans-esterification
process. This brings the viscosity of the oil at par with the petro-
diesel and all other impurities are removed.
IMPORTANCE OF BIODIESEL

Environment friendly
Clean burning
Renewable fuel
No engine modification
Increase in engine life
Biodegradable and non-toxic
Easy to handle and store
RAW MATERIALS

Rapeseed, the major source (>80%)

Sunflower oil (10%, Italy and Southern France)
Soybean oil (USA & Brazil)
Palm oil (Malaysia)
Linseed, olive oils (Spain)
Cottonseed oil (Greece)
Beef tallow (Ireland), lard, used frying oil (Austria),
Jatropha (Nicaragua & South Americas), Guang-Pi (China)
OPPORTUNITY
FOR INDIA
CAN BIODIESEL WORK IN INDIA?

India with just 2.4% of global area supports more than

16% of the human population and 17% of the cattle
population

India is one of the largest importers of edible oil

Where do we find the oil for biodiesel?

A sustainable source of vegetable oil is to be found before

we can think of biodiesel
JATROPHA MAY BE THE ANSWER?

• According to the Economic Survey (1995-96), Govt of India, of the cultivable land
area about 100-150 million hectares are classified as waste or degraded land
• Jatropha (Jatropha curcas, Ratanjyot, wild castor) thrives on any type of soil
– Needs minimal inputs or management
– Has no insect ,pests& not browsed by cattle or sheep
– Can survive long periods of drought
– Propagation is easy
– Yield from the 3rd year onwards and continues for 35-40 years
– 30% oil from seeds by expelling; 35% by solvent extraction
– The meal after extraction an excellent organic manure (38% protein, N:P:K ratio
2.7:1.2:1)
Vision for India

• Waste land available : 60 million HA.

• Waste land available for Jatropha plantation : 30 million HA.
• Plantation of Jatropha Curcas : 75,000 million trees.
• Yield of seeds @ 3 kg/year : 225,000 million Kg.
• Yield of Bio-Diesel @ 1/3 Kg of seed: 75,000 million Kg.
or 75 million tonnes.

This is 67% of total requirement of HSD in Transport sector

BIODIESEL &
INDIAN
RAILWAYS
BIODIESEL POTENTIAL
- INDIAN RAILWAYS
An estimate
Route Kilometer About 63,000 km
If 50% track available & 50 meters of both sides
Approx area 315000 ha
Considering a yield(seed) of 2 tons / ha
Yield of oil crop 0.63 MMTPA
Approx Biodiesel potential 220,000 tonnes i.e, about 10%
of the Railways diesel requirements
Jatropha Plantation

Study by Agro-Forestry Federation – Maharashtra (1991)

 Jatropha is a hardy plant.
 Well adopted to arid, semi-arid conditions.
 Low fertility and moisture demand.
 Grow on stony, shallow or even calcareous soil.
 Propagated through seed or cuttings.
 Tolerate to scanty to heavy rainfall.
Successful field trial

of
bio-diesel was conducted
on
Delhi-Amritsar Shatabadi express with five percent
bio-diesel on 31.12.2002
WHY BIODIESEL IMPORTANT FOR
RAILWAYS

Indian Rail has very large available land

Bio-diesel will help Railways to :
Improve upon emission norms
Eventually reduce diesel cost
Redeploy surplus manpower
Contribute to Environment protection

KHARAGPUR EXPERIENCE
Bio diesel esterification plant of 2 KL per day capacity was commissioned
in July 2006. This bio-diesel production plant was sanctioned by GM/SER
under law book item on out of turn basis. Work for design, erection and
commissioning was awarded to M/s Malnad Extraction Ltd., Shimoga,
Karnataka @Rs.28.95 lakhs. Various trial production of bio-diesel has been
done through feed procured locally, total 3,800 litres (approx.) bio-diesel
have been produced. This produced bio-diesel has confirmed to
IS:15607/2005 during various lab testing. At present this bio-diesel is being
used in three SRC based coaching locomotive as B-5 blend.

Along with Sri Shakeel Ahmed, DRM/KGP he briefed the mass-media on bio-diesel project
including its impact on socio-economic structure of the state.
Plantation of Jatropha Curcas

• 4.21 lakh saplings planted on Kharagpur division

during 2004-05- Biggest plantation of its type on
Railway land.
• 7 lakh saplings planted during 2005-06.
