Greenhouse
effect

What

is Greenhouse effect?

-The greenhouse effect is the process by

which radiation from a planet's
atmosphere warms the planet's surface to
a temperature above what it would be in
the absence of its atmosphere. If a
planet's atmosphere contains radiatively
active gases (i.e. greenhouse gases) the
atmosphere radiates energy in all
directions. Part of this radiation is
directed towards the surface, warming it.

Greenhouse
Gases

What
-A

are Greenhouse Gases?

greenhouse gas (sometimes abbreviated

GHG) is a gas in an atmosphere that absorbs
and emits radiation within the thermal infrared
range. This process is the fundamental cause
of the greenhouse effect. The primary
greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere are
water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous
oxide, and ozone. Without greenhouse gases,
the average temperature of Earth's surface
would be about 15 C (27 F) colder than the
present average of 14 C (57 F).

How

greenhouse gases
affect global warming

-The gases in the atmosphere that absorb

radiation are known as "greenhouse gases"
because they are largely responsible for the
greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect,
in turn, is one of the leading causes of
global warming.

Three

factors affect the degree to

which any greenhouse gas will
influence global warming:

1.Its abundance in the atmosphere

2.How long it stays in the atmosphere
3.Its global-warming potential

Global
Warming

What

is Global Warming?

-Global

warming is the term

used to describe a gradual
increase in the average
temperature of the Earth's
atmosphere and its oceans, a
change that is believed to be
permanently changing the Earth's
climate.

Causes
of Global
Warming

1.Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel

burning power plants

2. Carbon dioxide emissions from burning

gasoline for transportation

3. Methane emissions from animals,

agriculture such as rice paddies, and from
Arctic seabeds

4. Deforestation, especially tropical forests

for wood, pulp, and farmland

5. Increase in usage of chemical fertilizers

on croplands

Effects of
Global
Warming

1. Rise in sea levels worldwide

2. More killer storms

3. Massive crop failures

4. Widespread extinction of species

5. Disappearance of coral reefs
