    TITLE:
    FATIGUE LIFE ANALYSIS OF GAS
    TURBINE ROTOR BLADE

    Objective

    To estimate the fatigue life of the turbine


    blades of a gas turbine engine.

    INTRODUCTION
    Most of the aircrafts use gas turbine
    engines for its operation.
    Inlet, Compressor , Combustion chamber,
    Turbine and nozzle are the key
    components of the engine.
    Its operation is based on Brayton cycle.

    TURBINE BLADES
    Turbine are present next to the combustion
    chamber.
    It consists of series of blades.
    It does not involve in the process.
    But it performs the following tasks
    a) to drive the compressor by
    means of a rotating shaft.
    b) it direct the gas from
    combustors with high pressure and
    temperature to the nozzle to increase the
    velocity to produce thrust.

    Failures on turbine blades


    The engine components fails due to
    several effects such as corrosion, wear,
    fracture, fatigue, etc.
    Fatigue is the important cause for turbine
    blade failure.
    Fatigue occurs due to application of
    repeated cyclic load on the structural
    members.

    Loads acting on the turbine blades are


    1) Gas Bending load - due to the high pressure
    of the gas
    2) Centrifugal load - due to the high
    rotational velocity of the blades
    3) Thermal load
    - due to the high
    temperature of the gas
    Due to the repeated application of the these loads
    turbine blade fatigue failure occurs.

    The scope of this paper is to estimate the fatigue life of
    the turbine blades which is subjected to vibrations,
    gas bending loading and centrifugal loads.
    It is observed the during static loading the dovetail
    region will have minimum life in LCF and during
    dynamic loading blades will have minimum life in HCF.

    Failure Analysis of Gas Turbine Blades

    The failure analysis of gas turbine blades made of nickel-base
    alloy was carried out in two discrete sections:
    a) Mechanical analysis,
    b) Metallurgical analysis,

    Using ANSYS Workbench 11.0 software (advanced CFD


    section), a steady state gas flow analysis was carried out, on the
    pressure and temperature distributions and velocity vectors and
    streamlines were delineated.

    Then, by mapping these results on the other section of it


    (simulation section), equivalent stresses and total deformation
    were determined.
