    Setting
    Gladsheim (Golden Palace) where Odin sits at the
    feast of other gods or with the heroes in Valhalla.
    Well of Wisdom- where Odin sought for more
    wisdom.
    Hall of the Slain, Valhalla- a place to which they
    bought the heroes.
    Niflheim, the world of the dead.
    Kingdom of Death was Helas. No god had any
    authority there, even Odin.
    Odin was the sky-father
    He is strange and solemn figure, always
    aloof.
    On his shoulders perch two raven,
    Thought (Hugin) and Memory (Munin)
    He had the responsibility than all the
    other gods together of postponing the day
    of dooms, Ragnarok.
    He went down to the Well of Wisdom
    guarded by Mimir the wise.
    The Runes were magical inscription,
    immensely powerful for him who could
    inscribe them on- stone, metal, wood.
    Odin learned them at the cost of
    mysterious pain.
    He passed the hard-won knowledge on to
    men.
    Maidens were his attendants, the
    Valkyries.
    Their chief task was to go to the
    battlefield and decide at Odins bidding
    who should win and who should die, and
    carry the brave dead to Odin.
    Wednesday is Odins day. The
    Southern form of his name was Woden.
    The five important gods: Balder, Thor,
    Freyr, Heimdall and Tyr.
    Balder was the most beloved god, on
    earth and heaven.
    One night he was troubled with dreams.
    Frigga, the wife of Odin.
    She went through the world and exacted
    an oath from everything.
    Odin still feared. He went down to
    Niflheim.
    Hela or Hel the Goddess of Death.
    A wise woman told him for whom the
    house had been made ready.
    They played a game accordingly which
    gave them much pleasure.
    They would try to hit Balder.
    Loki was not a god, but he is a son of
    Giant.
    He went to Frigga disguised as a women
    and entered into talk with her.
    Hoder, Balders brother who was blind.
    Hoder took the mistletoe and hurled it
    with all his strength. Under Lokis
    guidance it sped to Balders heart and he
    died.
    Frigga look for volunteer to go down to
    Hela and try to ransom Balder.
    Hermod, one of his sons, offered
    himself. He used Sleipnner and he sped
    down to Niflheim.
    His body was place beside his wife,
    Nanna.
    Their body was sailed out to sea and
    wrapped it in fire.
    Hela with the gods petition, she would
    give Balder back if it were proved to her
    that all everywhere mourned for him.
    The Giantess refused to weep
    One dry tears will you get from me she
    said mockingly.
    So Hela kept her dead.
    Loki was punished.
    He was seized and bound him in a deep
    cavern. Above his head a serpent was
    place so the venom fell upon his face.
    Sigyn, his wife. She took her place at his
    side and caught the venom in a cup.
