Sericulture, the rearing of silkworms for silk production, was introduced to China by the Queen of China. The most widely used silkworm is Bombyx mori. There are five main types of silk produced from different silkworm species. China and India are the top producers, accounting for over 60% of global production annually. Sericulture provides income and employment for rural communities in India, supporting around 63 lakh people and generating Rs. 60,000-75,000 per acre annually.
