The Essentials Of Interlocking

Inter+Locking=Interlocking

Mutual Fastening
Interlocking
 An arrangement of signals, points and
appliances, operated from a panel or
lever frame or VDU, so interconnected
by Mechanical locking or electrical
locking or both that their operation must
take place in proper sequence to ensure
safety
Rules Of Interlocking
Rule-1-
It must not be possible to take 'OFF' a
running signal unless the following are
ensured not only in the actual portion of the
track on which the train has to travel, but
also in the overlap
A) All the points are correctly set.
b) All the facing points are locked (at site).
c) All the interlocked level crossing gates are
closed and locked against road traffic.
d) The isolation is ensured.
What is an overlap?
 An overlap, where required, provides
protection against the consequences of
a train overrunning a signal at red.
 ISOLATION means an arrangement,
secured by the setting of points or other
approved means, to protect the line so
isolated from the danger of obstruction
from other connected line or lines.
S301C

S305C
Implementation of Rule-1
 For the route S302C to S304C
 Point P304C need to be in left condition
 The isolation need to be set that is overlap
O_S304C_1 need to be set. In this overlap
P302C should be in right direction And P301C
should be in right direction.point track circuit
should be free.
 Facing point P304C should be set in left and
locked.
 There is no level crossing . If any then should
be locked.
Rule No 2-
 Once the signal has been taken OFF, it
must not be possible to do any of the
following unless the signal has first been
put back to the 'ON' position -
 (a) Alter the position of the relevant
points.
 (b) Unlock the relevant facing points
 (c) Unlock and open the relevant level
crossing gate
 (d) Disturb the relevant isolation.
Implementation of Rule-2
 If once the route S302C to S304C given
and Signal S302C is OFF. Then It is not
possible -
 to unlock and move P304C, P302C and
P301C which are in the route and in
isolation.
 Neither to unlock any Gate(if any) until
the signal is replaced the ‘ON’ position.
Rule No-3
 It shall not be Possible to take ‘OFF’ at
the same time, any two fixed signals
which can lead to any conflicting
movements.
What is conflicting movements?
 Two or more routes which oppose
coverage or intersect such that
simultaneous movements can not be
made without the possibility of
collision(neither head on nor lateral).
Implementation of Rule No -3
 Here the Routes S302C to S304C and
S305C to S307C are conflicting routes
so we can not set both route
simultaneously.
Rule No-4
 Where feasible, points shall be so
interlocked as to avoid any conflicting
movement.
Implementation of Rule No-4
 Here for Route S302C to S304C
 Point P303C and P301C give permission
for conflicting movement so these
should be locked in normal direction.
Approach Locking
 The approach locking is an interlocking which
is locked if a train is on the approach section
of the origin signal of a route and the signal
is at permissive state.
 Approach section- The approach section is the
distance before on origin signal which assures that
the run of a train approaching the signal is not
disturbed if the signal has been closed.
ROUTE HOLDING
 For ensuring safety of the train after
giving signals it is necessary that the
route should be held,
 1. When the train is approaching and
 2. While the train is on the Route.
Route locking or back locking
 Once a route is set and train has passed
the signal, then we can not change the
route until the train clears all the points
in point zone. This is called route
locking or back locking
