• According to the classical
sources Celtic society was
divided into tribal areas and
tribal identity may have been
expressed through body
decoration.

• The power was mainly localized

WARFARE
• For hundreds of years, the Celtic warrior represented the
quintessential barbarian warrior to the settled peoples of
the Mediterranean
• The Celts were a warrior culture
• They relied on physical strength, not on military tactics
• Fought as mercenaries
Boudicca
• Wife of a celtic warlord;
• Fought against the romans after her husband died;
• Got many victories but was ultimately defeated.
Technology and Infrastructure
• Highly skilled craftsmen
• The first roadbuilders
• Had their own calendar
Celtic Art
• The art of the Celts is generally associated with
ornamental artistry
• Became widely spread around 800BC
• This period was know as the “Hallstatt Period”
La Tène
• As Celtic art traditions continued, their style
became associated with people of La Tene culture
• It spread in Europe and was influenced by the
Mediteranean cultures
Celtic Deities
The Celts’ religion was polytheistic; they believed in many gods, male and female,
some of which were particularly significant for the Celtic folk.
Daghda, god of wisdom

“Daghda” means “good god”
His strength derived from his
knowledge
He had immense power
He wielded a magical club,
The Morrigan, Goddess of battle and
war

She was a trio of individuals


She embodied the darker side of nature
She often took the appearance of a gigantic crow
Probably the best-known goddess
Celtic Festivals

Festivals were extremely


important events in the lives of
the Celts. They were huge
feasts held to honor the gods.

Beltane

• Saxons call it The Walpurgisnight


• Held on May the 1st, representing regrowth and
rebirth
• It heralds the arrival of summer
Samhain

• It marked the first day of


winter
• Also called Hallowe’en
• It was though that the worlds of
the dead(the Sidh) and the
living were getting closer
What did their rituals
involve?

• Walking over burning coal


• Sacrificing animals
• Drinking blood to have
premonitions
• Human sacrifices
• Cutting mistletoe branches
The Druids

• Very mysterious figures


• Educated and respected
• Responsable for religious ceremonies
