Procrastination

“A year from now you may wish you had started today.”

The greatest thief this world has ever produced is

procrastination

Uday
What??
Put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done

• Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what
should have been done the day before yesterday
• Procrastination refers to the voluntary postponement of an unpleasant task,
often against one’s better judgment
• Procrastination is simply postponing action - "often with the sense of deferring
though indecision, when early action would have been preferable," or as
"defer[ing] action, especially without good reason."
According to some researchers, procrastination has more than quadrupled in the
last 30 years.
 Some surveys suggest that 85-95% of students have problems associated with
procrastination
 Procrastination statistics suggest that 40% of people have experienced financial loss
due to procrastination
 In 1978, 5% of the population admitted to being chronic procrastinators compared to
roughly 26% of the population today

Procrastination arises from our unhelpful rules and assumptions

about what we expect of ourselves and the world

Anxiety and Worry lead to Procrastination and vicious cycle of delay

Effects of Procrastinations
The effects of procrastination don’t just lie within one aspect of our life; it spreads, kind of like a virus to other
aspects and if you don’t control it, you’ll start doing it more and more.
• We put off going to the doctor, then discover we have a
serious illness that could have been treated more
successfully if we had gone sooner.

• Stress/Anxiety • We wait to pay our bills even if we have money in the

• Guilt Feeling account, leading to late fees and other charges.

• Relationships Impact • We don’t do our taxes until the night before they are due,
and then make a mess of it and miss out on our refund or
get audited.

• We miss deadlines at work, which affects our annual

review. This can lead to not getting a raise or promotion,
or even not keeping the job.
External consequences
 Negative things that happened to you because you
procrastinated.
 Lost money, had to pay a fine, missed out on a merit
increase, lost a relationship, or received a poor grade.
Common Internal Consequences are :
 Feelings of inadequacy, guilt, depression, anxiety, or
embarrassment
When/What?? People procrastinate on different things.

 Avoiding a confrontation with a friend, significant other, spouse, or boss.  Maybe it’s your bank balance
 Working on Unpleasant tasks.  What about your health and fitness
 The big picture scares us.  What about projects at work?
 We don’t know where to start.
 Not tackling bad habits such as smoking, excess drinking, overeating.
 We don’t feel like doing it.
Health, exercise, work,
studying, cleaning…or
returning a call to someone
you don’t like.

 Procrastination often saves us from our

fear of failure.
 Procrastination maintains perfectionism
 Procrastination may be caused by a fear of
success
 Procrastination is a form of rebellion
 Procrastination allows us to live in the
world of hopes, wishes, and maybes
Procrastination excuses
One of the main reasons that procrastination is a challenge to overcome is that everybody has
a different reason for doing it. What's more, the same person may have a variety of reasons for
procrastinating on different tasks
Most of our procrastination feelings come from a subconscious fear or self-limiting belief

Excuse 1: “It doesn’t matter.” Excuse 6: “I keep forgetting to do it.”

Excuse 2: “I need to do ______ first.” Excuse 7: “I don’t feel like doing it.”
Excuse 3: “I need more information to get started.”
Excuse 4: “I feel overwhelmed and have too much to do.”
Excuse 5: “I don’t have time right now.”
 Tax return (or insert any thing you dislike)…..I’ve got so many more important things to do than
this.
 Not much detail in this brief, I’ll wait for more information.
 This essay question is pathetic….if they can’t make an effort why should I.
 Last day of sunshine for the week! I’ll start it tomorrow.
 I work better under pressure – I am just a last minute person
The trouble is that what starts off as a default reaction to something that you find uncomfortable, or difficult
or just plain boring; becomes your elaborate plot to convince yourself that it is better to put these things
off…..and you do!
Why??
Behavioral procrastination
 Putting off tasks
 strategy that allows people to shift blame and avoid action
 Suffer from low esteem and self-doubt and worry about how other people judge their abilities
Decisional procrastination
 Delaying Choice
 strategy is to put off making a decision when dealing with conflicts or choices
 afraid of errors and are likely to be perfectionists
 seek out more and more information about alternatives
psychologists see procrastination as kind of avoidance behavior, a
coping mechanism gone awry in which people "give in to feel good"
Mindset: Fixed vs Growth Mind Set Present Vs Future You
Why??
Four Simple Reasons For Procrastination

• Difficult The task seems too hard to do

• Time-consuming Free time is unavailable until the weekend
• Lack of knowledge/skills Don’t want to make a mistake until you’re sure it’s right
• Fears Everyone will know you made a mistake

Four Complex Reasons For Procrastination

• Perfectionism 1. “If you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all”

2. May delay starting a project
3. Creates dissatisfaction & frustration
• Anger/Hostility 1. Withhold best efforts out of spite
2. Getting Even
• Low Frustration Tolerance 1. Feeling overwhelmed
2. Unfairness
• Self-Downing 1. Minimize your skills/abilities
2. Attribute success to luck
3. Cannot accept praise for work accomplished
Attention to Details: The perfectionist pays too
much attention to details; the dreamer doesn’t
pay enough attention.

Focus on the Future: The worrier is overly

concerned about what might happen if…; the
crisis-maker is not sufficiently concerned (until
crunch time).

Relationship to Others: The defier goes

against what others want; the pleaser is overly
oriented to what others want.
Personality Type
 Rebel
 Over-Acheiver
 Adrenaline Addict
 Worrier

We procrastinate because of a misregulation of emotion
