    SAMBUGKOS

    SAMA-SAMA, BUGKOS-BUGKOS: SUSTAINABLE GROWTH THROUGH


    UNIFIED COMMUNITY EFFORT

    From the Filipino custom bayanihan, derived from a Filipino word


    “bayan”, which means nation, town or community. The term bayanihan
    itself literally means “being in a bayan”, which refers to the spirit of
    communal unity, work and cooperation to achieve a particular goal.
    Same notion applies for the redevelopment of Balagtas Heights
    Resettlement Project located at Brgy. Santol, Balagtas, Bulacan.

    The concept SAMBUGKOS was formed through amalgamation of Filipino words “sama-sama and bugkos-
    bugkos”, which focuses on making sustainable growth in the resettlement area through unified community
    effort. Since design alone cannot fix the issues of social isolation and lack of community sense, opportunities for
    building their lives, skills, healthy environment and livable communities is what the concept rooting for. By
    providing Sustainable Livelihood Programs, it endeavors to strengthen the skills, competencies, abilities and
    resources of poor, vulnerable and marginalized families, in order to create an enabling environment for
    accessing income generating opportunities to address basic needs, thereby improving their socio-economic
    well-being, and by engaging them throughout the built environment where one could develop a sense of
    belongingness and social communication are the key aspects in the empowering process towards sustainable
    community. Empowering the community makes people to become active in making positive decisions that
    influence their communities and shape their lives.
