Rfid Technology: S Chandra Mahesh V R Siddhartha Engineering College

RFID technology allows for radio frequency identification between a reader and a tag. [1] RFID was first used in World War 2 by Britain to identify aircraft. [2] RFID tags can be either active, containing a battery, or passive, deriving power from the reader's radio waves. [3] Common applications of RFID include tracking people, documents, packages and in manufacturing and healthcare settings.

RFID

• RFID stands for

Radio
Frequency
IDentification
ABOUT RFID

• RFID was first used at the time of world war 2 by Britain

• It was used to test the aircraft was a friend or foe
• RFID is generally used to transfer of data between the reader and a object
or a person identity or package for tracking.
RFID REQUIREMENTS

• Tag
• Antenna
• Reader
• Station
PRINCIPLE INVOLVED
• Inductive Coupling
Transfer of energy from one chip to another by sharing magnetic energy and
circuitry uses load modulation to send the data back to reader.
WORKING OF RFID

• Tag: RFID tag consists of a micro chip in a label able to transport data when
exposed to radio waves by antenna.
• Tag consists of chip , antenna and package
• Tags are classified into two types based on their working
Active tags
Passive tags
ACTIVE AND PASSIVE TAGS

• Active tags contain battery

• It’s range last about hundred feet

• Passive tags contain no battery

• It gets powered from the reader
• Its range is about ten feet
RFID TAG

• RFID tag consists of four parts

1. Header: identifies EPC
2. EPC manager : identifies the manufacturer
3. Object class: identifies the type of product
4. Serial Number: unique from product to product
WORKING OF RFID

• RFID contains a reader that emit the radio waves to identify the tags
• The frequency range of operations determine its use
• General RFID readers frequency is about 13.56 MHz
• The range of working is less than 1m
• From the antenna the reader gets the information and pass it to the base
station provided.
APPLICATIONS OF RFID

• People Tracking : Rfid wrist bands can be used to track the location of a
person in the case of child kidnaps .
• Document Tracking : Instead of searching all the rows by using RFID we can
able to locate the document easily by connecting a RFID tag
• Health Care : Health monitoring system accesing patient records by their tags
• Manufacturing : Track package while shipping maintenance of goods become
easy theft can be reduced.
BARCODES VS RFID

• Barcodes can store a limited amount of information whereas RFID stores a

large amount of information
• Barcodes requires line of sight wheares RFID doesn’t require .
• RFIDs are more efficient than barcodes.
DISADVANTAGES OF RFID

• Although there are a wide range of applications with RFID but

• They requires high initial investment
• Collision : it occurs due to multiple signals accessing the signal at a time this
may lead to loss of information
• Less secure authentication
CONCLUSION

• There are advantages as well as disadvantages by the use of RFID

• Today most of the offices are using these RFID tags in their identity for
accessing and almost these are used in malls too
• Use of RFID is increasing tremendously which reduced a lot of work of labour
and saved a lot of time
• Rfid is a great evolution technology for a developing India .
