With the onset of the modern age in Chinese
literary history in the 19th century, the
translation of many Western writings into a
variety of Chinese dialects and Mandarin
Chinese literature started to move away from
its classical identity. This literary
transformation started the New Culture

Hanja – Korea’ s first writing system
Korean literature is influenced are rooted in
Chinese philosophies: Taoism, Confucianism, and
Buddhism

Earliest Korean writings were not successfully
preserved because they were etched in stones,
tombs, and bamboo.
1. Classical – shaped by Korean folk beliefs which were
written in Hanja
a. hyangga – poems of varying lengths composed
by Buddhist monks
KOREA b. kayo – songs categorized as either short or

Literary History Period – 1945, Korea became a divided protectorate
Japanese literary history could be divided into four parts:
1. Ancient – only oral traditions existed because of the
absence of writing system. Consequently, written
literature came with the introduction of Kanji, which
was followed by The Kojiki, the oldest extant chronicle
JAPAN in Japan
2. Classic – considered the golden era of art and
literature and produced Tale of Genji, a 54—chapter
novel considered one of the oldest novels in the
world
3. Medieval – the period of civil war and strife in Japan
4. Modern – Literature of hostilities were replaced with
the literature of peace. It was the era of haiku and kabuki
became popular literary forms.
• I novel – long-form fiction that depicts the uglier side
JAPAN of life and carries the depressing tone of Naturalism
– different narrative in which the events in the
story paralleled the events in the author’s life
4. Modern – most significant development in 21st Century
Literature is the rise of manga, a popular form of
