WHAT DOES FEDERALISM MEAN?


Federalism is the mixed or compound mode of
government, combining a general government
(the central or ‘federal’ government) with regional
governments in a single political system. It’s
distinctive feature, exemplified in the founding
example of modern federalism by the United
States Of America under the Constitution of 1787
is a relationship of parity between the two levels
of government established.
LEADING EXAMPLES OF FEDERATION

Leading examples of the federation or federal


state include the United States, Canada,
Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina,
Australia, and India. Some also today
characterize the European Union as the
pioneering example of federalism in a multi-
state setting, in a concept termed the federal
union of states.
WHY WAS FEDERALISM ADOPTED?

The United States Constitution….The result was


a balance of powers between the states and
the federal government, with the federal
government clearly in charge. This is the
system of federalism we still use today. The
constitution expressly grants broad powers to
the federal government but not to the states.
WHY WAS IT ADOPTED IN INDIA?

The development of Indian Federalism:


The framers of the Indian Constitution wanted to
build a strong united India. They have adopted
federalism to actualize and uphold the values
of national unity, cultural diversity, regional
autonomy and rapid socio-economic
transformation through collective efforts.
DIVISION OF POWER BETWEEN DIFFERENT
LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT
Federalism is a system of government that
establishes a constitutionally specified
division of powers between different levels of
government. There are usually two main
levels: (i) a national, central or federal level;
and (ii) a state ;provincial or regional level.
In the United States , the U.S. Constitution
gives certain powers to the federal
government , other powers to the state
governments , and yet other powers to
both.
States have their own legislative branch
,executive branch ,and judicial branch . The
states are empowered to pass ,enforce , and
interpret laws , as long as they do not violate
the Constitution.
The federal government determines foreign
policy ,with exclusive power to make treaties ,
declare war , andABUNDANCE.ppt
control imports and exports .
It also has the sole authority to print money .
