Premlata was born in Sukhiapokri, a small place near
Darjeeling.
She studied in a Nepali medium school, but only up to
class 12.
At the age of 18, she got married and moved to
Jamshedpur to start a new life.
Within a year, she gave birth to a baby girl and got busy
with her family responsibilities.
She always wanted the ‘best possible’ for her two
daughters in all fields education, sports, all round
development.
In the evenings she used to take her two daughters to the
JRD Sports complex to learn tennis and since she had to
wait there even she joined the ladies gym- mainly for
yoga classes.
At the JRD Sports complex she learned about the ‘Dalma
Hills Walking Competition’ organized by the famous
mountaineer Bachendri Pal. She took part and
unexpectedly won third prize.
She started her mountaineering career in the year 1999.
Her first stop was the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering
in Uttarkashi, for a course of 21 days, where all the
trainees were half her age including her daughter.
Many a times the instructor mocked her by passing
statements as ‘ iss age mein mountaineering karne aayi
ho? You won’t be able to do it.’
But to everyone’s surprise she turned out to be the best
and grabbed the best trainee award with a “A” grade.
This single victory gave her a giant leap in confidence.
She event went for a advanced course at the Himalayan
Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling and for many
mountaineering expeditions along with Bachendri Pal.
These expeditions took her to the Karkoram pass, Stok
Kangri( Ladakh) and Island Peak (Nepal).
Another small mountain which she conquered was the
freedom to wear what she wanted.
After the Island Peak expedition Bachendri Pal asked
her to get trained for Mount Everest which she refused
at first, but after 5 years During an Expedition to Mount
Kilimanjaro, when she was again asked about an
expedition to Mount Everest she agreed.
And hence, she was then the oldest woman from India
who climbed Mount Everest at a age of 48.
In 2012, she conquered Mt. Elbrus in Russia and Mt.
Aconcagua in South America.
