Optimization of Production of Bio Diesel Using Aspen Plus
This document discusses the optimization of biodiesel production using ASPEN Plus simulation software. It examines different methods of biodiesel production, including transesterification and esterification. Two models of transesterification are explored - one using distillation and one without. The esterification process is also modeled. The goal is to determine optimal parameters for maximum conversion and minimum heat duty using ASPEN Plus process simulation.

This calls to discovering other fuels and inventing new ways to produce more efficient and sustainable sources of energy. Out of all the options, bio-fuels produced from bio mass is one said to be one of the best options. Bio-fuels are healthy for the environment and the machine, economical and abundantly available. ◦ Biodiesel, a type of bio-fuel is one of the best alternatives. ◦ In this project, we go about discussing various methods in which biodiesel is produced. ◦ We study the various parameters in the processes using ASPENPLUS and determine how they affect the processes. ◦ Different models and configurations are considered for which optimum parameters are determined for maximum conversion and less heat duty. METHODS OF BIODIESEL PRODUCTION Biodiesel is a mixture of unsaturated fatty alkyl- esters (FAAEs), got from triglyceride particles. 1. Trans-esterification method. Triglycerides, methanol and NaOH or KOH are the crude materials required. The reaction produces glycerine as a by product which is removed using a decanter. 2. Esterification process. Free unsaturated fat, methanol and a solid acid catalyst as crude materials. Water is by product in this reaction. CHEMICAL PROCESS SIMULATOR AND TYPES PROCESS SIMULATION: Used for analysis, design, development and optimization of technical process. Example: Chemical Plants, Power stations, Complex manufacturing process. It is model based representation of technical process and unit operations in software TYPES: ASPEN PLUS ASPEN HYSYS CHEMCAD PRO II UNISIM MODELS USED IN THIS PROCESS For trans-esterification process following models are used:
Model 1- using Distillation column
Stoichiometric Equation for reaction taking place:
C57H104O6 + 3CH3OH → 3C19H36O2 + C3H8O3
(Triolein) (methanol) (Biodiesel) (Glycerol) Model 2- without using distillation column Stoichiometric equation for reaction taking place: C57H104O6 + 3CH3OH → 3C19H36O2 + C3H8O3 (Triolein) (Methanol) (Biodiesel) (Glycerol)
For esterification the following model is used:
Model - Esterification of oleic acid with methanol may be described by: Methanol + oleic Acid → Ester (Biodiesel) + Water
