The Radio
• Radio is a way to send electromagnetic signals over a long distance, to
deliver information from one place to another. • Electromagnetic waves are a combination of electrical and magnetic fields. • The radio converts these electromagnetic waves, called a signal, into sounds that humans can hear. • A machine that sends radio signals is called a transmitter, while a machine that "picks up" the signals is called a receiver • When radio signals are sent out to many receivers at the same time, it is called a broadcast. • The discovery of radio waves was one of the most significant discoveries in terms of communication. History Many people worked to make radio possible. • James Clerk Maxwell in mid 1860’s predicted radio waves. • Heinrich R. Hertz in Germany first showed that radio waves existed in the late 1880’s . • Guglielmo Marconi in Italy made radio into a practical tool of telegraphy, used mainly by ships at sea. In 1896 he made the first transmission but he only transmitted signals not voice. He is often named as the inventor of the radio. • But NikolaTesla, a Serb who moved to the USA, invented the theoretical model for radio in 1892 and should be recognized as the real father of the radio. • Later inventors learned to transmit voices, which led to broadcasting of news, music and entertainment. • Voice over the air, as we know radio today, came only in 1921. Date of creation • In 1885 Marconi built the radio equipment and in 1896 he get the patent. • In 1897 was established the first radio station. Relevant Facts • Radio: can refer to the electronic appliance that we listen with or the content listened to. • However, it all started with "radio waves" - electromagnetic waves that have the capacity to transmit music, speech, pictures and other data invisibly through the air. • Many devices work by using this waves including: radio, microwaves, cordless phones, remote controlled toys, television broadcasts, wireless internet routers and more. • Radios also play an important role in communications for police, fire, industry, and the military. • Today there are more than 33,000 radio stations around the world, with more than 12,000 in the US. • Worldwide there are more than 2 billion radio devices in use, or about one radio for every 3 persons. Fun Facts • The word “radio” was not introduced until 1903. • Before that, transmissions were called “wireless telegraphy”. • From 1922-1971 people could not listen to the radio in the United Kindom without having a licence. • In 1920 the first commercial radio station in de world went on the air in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. • In the early days of the radio companies who made soap often paid to send complete stories or dramas by radio. They were called Soap operas. • Some children in Autralia live so far away from schools that receiving lessons through a two-way radio. • News information stations are one of the most popular broadcast radio formats. • The NASA use radio telescopes to study space.
