DIFFERENCES TO WATCH
FOR

• British scales vs continental scales

• AC vs DC
GAUGE VARIETIES
• Broad Gauge – Spain, Russian use 5 foot gauge

• Standard Gauge - same as US

• Narrow Gauge

• Meter Gauge

• 750 mm

• Smaller industrial or field operations

UNIQUE FEATURES
CATENARY

• Catenary – Europe has an extensive electric

network. There are differences between
countries on phase (AC/DC), voltage, and
wire arrangements

• Model catenary is available in most of the

scales
RACK RAILWAY
There is a fair number of rack railways in Switzerland as well as
a few other countries. Models are available for both track and
engines
COUPLERS
Prototype still using mostly a hook and loop
arrangement with buffers to maintain compression
• Traditional couplers

• hook and loop in HO

• “Rapido” coupler in N

• Most models today come with NEM coupler pocket so

you can easily change couplers

• Kadee couplers available to fit NEM pocket

• Other manufactures also make “close-coupling”

• Buffers on cars can lock if coupled too close on sharper

curves
